Chapter 53 Narrowing the Scope
Handsome took the bottle, twisted his waist, and walked out without another word.
Dr. Bai remarked, "Old Gu is something else! He’s handed you a little pretty boy."
Wang Zixuan scoffed, "Him? Pretty? I think you have more than a problem with your taste—your eyes must be faulty."
Dr. Bai laughed, "As the saying goes: when men and women work together, work never tires."
Wang Zixuan retorted, "You think I want to deal with this? Old Gu insisted on dumping him on me. Said whoever catches is responsible for management. I’d rather let them do the catching, if they’re capable. But then, trouble lands on me, and I’m stuck dragging around this dead weight. It ruins my mood and affects my work. What, are you interested in him?"
Dr. Bai responded, "Of course, I’m much more interested in you."
That left Wang Zixuan genuinely stunned, water she’d just swallowed spraying from her mouth.
Dr. Bai continued, "But you’re not even a man! Ha ha."
Wang Zixuan pouted, flustered by the teasing, "Cut it out."
At that moment, the machine beside them started humming. Both turned to look. The results were displayed on the screen. Dr. Bai walked over and began operating it.
Dr. Bai announced, "The results are in. The expelled gas contains mercaptan, nitric acid mercaptan, and methamphetamine. These are unique compounds found only in the foul-smelling liquid of non-human creatures."
Wang Zixuan approached as well. "Is it a skunk, a weasel, or one of those werewolf clans?"
Dr. Bai replied, "None of the above."
Wang Zixuan was taken aback. Could it be a new monster that hadn’t been registered in M City? Handsome, after washing the bottle, was dispatched to the archives to retrieve all records on fox spirits. The archive room was busy: one person was assisting someone, while a middle-aged woman was browsing documents. Handsome entered quietly, first checking her work badge.
He greeted politely, "Hello."
The woman paused her work and looked up. Handsome stammered, "Um, Sister Zixuan asked me to collect the fox spirit files."
Zhou Ning replied, "You must be the new intern."
Handsome nodded, "Ah!"
Zhou Ning inspected Handsome, poking and prodding, making him uneasy enough to retreat.
Zhou Ning commented, "Nothing particularly special. Just two shoulders and one head like everyone else. So why can’t memories be erased?"
Handsome relaxed at her words. "Sister Ning, you must be pretty busy here. Lots of cases?"
Zhou Ning snorted, "Busy my foot. There are barely over nine thousand non-humans in M City, not even ten thousand yet."
At the window, a form was handed over. "Would you mind signing this for me? I've completed all the procedures."
Zhou Ning, munching on sunflower seeds, took out a sign and placed it outside. It read, ‘Closed for Business.’
She said, "Work’s over. If you need anything, come back tomorrow."
Handsome asked, "Sister Ning, with so many non-humans, how do we manage?"
Zhou Ning replied, "We have a surveillance room. Those guys aren’t just slacking off—they’re the technical geeks here. They can access every camera in the jurisdiction. If anything happens, they're the first to know. Impressive, right?"
Handsome asked, "What about places the cameras can’t reach?"
Zhou Ning shrugged, "Just call security then. 10018. Who has the time to plot crimes every day?"
Handsome nodded in understanding. At that moment, Wang Zixuan pushed the door open.
Wang Zixuan asked, "Why haven’t the fox spirit files been pulled yet? Why is it taking so long?"
Zhou Ning, a bit disgruntled, turned away and continued munching on her sunflower seeds.
