Chapter 122: Beaten Up
Checking the location data on Hao Yingjun’s wristband, a sense of foreboding washed over Wang Zixuan.
"Don't tell me this brat is actually planning to break the law," Wang Zixuan muttered.
Meanwhile, Hao Yingjun was just about to leave, bidding farewell to Hu Xiaoxiao. "I won't keep you any longer. Uh, I'm heading out. My apologies."
He took another sip of his beer and turned to walk away. At that moment, a jolt of electricity surged through his wristband, stunning him so severely that foam began to bubble at the corners of his mouth. Hu Xiaoxiao, who had been idly eating while watching him, realized something was wrong. She rushed over.
"Hao Yingjun? Oh my god, Hao Yingjun! What’s wrong with you? Ah!"
Hao Yingjun gave her a soulful look before using the strength of her grip to pull himself up, gazing at her with a look of joy. With foam still clinging to his lips, he rasped, "You’ve finally decided to acknowledge me."
Hu Xiaoxiao looked away, reluctant. "I’ve changed my name now. It’s Hu Xiaoxiao. There’s no need for you to dwell on me. I’m doing quite well, really."
"How could I not dwell on you?" Hao Yingjun replied. "Because the other you... is already dead."
"Who on earth are you?" Hu Xiaoxiao asked in disbelief.
Hao Yingjun wiped the foam from his mouth. "I’m from the 444 Convenience Store. Could I ask you to come back with me for an investigation?"
Hu Xiaoxiao looked at him in silence, her expression unreadable. Before long, Wang Zixuan darted out from the side and tackled her to the ground.
Hao Yingjun glared at her. "Are you insane?"
"Do you have the meds?" Wang Zixuan retorted.
"How much do you need? I’ve got plenty."
"I’ll take as much as you’ve got."
...
Wang Zixuan glared at Hao Yingjun. "Were you thinking of eloping with her?"
Before she could finish her sentence, a passerby lunged forward and kicked them both aside. Hao Yingjun scrambled to check on the situation, only to look up and find themselves surrounded by several burly men. Moments later, they were both placed in handcuffs, and Wang Zixuan was shaken awake.
She stared blankly at Hao Yingjun, making him feel so unsettled that he finally snapped.
Raising his cuffed arm, he said, "Big sister, next time you decide to electrocute me, could you at least give me a heads-up?"
Wang Zixuan yanked his arm down hard. "You left the house without your phone. How was I supposed to warn you? Naturally, I suspected you were trying to bolt."
"The automatic shock is only supposed to trigger past ten kilometers!" Hao Yingjun protested. "I was only five or six hundred meters away! You couldn't have just..."
Wang Zixuan gave his arm another sharp tug, cutting him off. "This is Beijing. The situation is incredibly complex. I have to be decisive."
"You know it's Beijing, too! Xiao Si is still back at the house—where could I possibly run to?"
"How was I supposed to know if you two hadn't already planned a rendezvous point?"
Just then, one of the men nearby intervened. "Wait, wait, hold on! Can we be serious? I’m trying to conduct an investigation here! Could you show a little respect? If you two cause any trouble here in the capital, let me tell you, I—I—kicking you would be getting off easy!"
Having vented his frustration, he caught a glimpse of Wang Zixuan’s credentials and couldn't help but swallow hard. This was one of the rare Soul Ferrymen. The highest rank among the officers present was merely a Chief Inspector, and even if they were promoted to Bureau Chief, they would still have to tread carefully around a Ferryman. And this one, it seemed, had quite an impressive background.
