Chapter 105: The Mid-Autumn Festival
As the afternoon shift at Supermarket No. 444 was winding down, Xiao Mei entered the meeting room carrying a large box of mooncakes. Several people were sitting there, bored.
Xiao Mei said, “Tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival. The supermarket’s welfare gift — two boxes of mooncakes and two bottles of yogurt for everyone. No taking extras.”
Xiao Deng replied, “I especially love the Ritz-Carlton double egg yolk white lotus seed mooncakes. Every festival, my mother buys them for me. That’s the taste of childhood, the taste of home.” He patted Xiao Deng’s shoulder as he spoke, his face filled with nostalgic warmth.
Xiao Deng then asked, “By the way, Xiao Mei, what kind of filling are these mooncakes?”
Xiao Mei answered, “They’re those five-nut mooncakes I bought from Taobao — buy 1.5 jin, get 3 jin free, plus an 80% discount. You should be happy.”
Xiao Deng rolled his eyes, utterly speechless.
Xiao Deng quickly grabbed two more boxes, saying, “I’m not picky. My childhood was all about five-nut flavor. Deng, don’t want them? I’ll take them.”
Xiao Deng had no interest and went back to his seat, lost in thought.
Xiao Mei glanced around and asked, “Where are the big sister and that newbie?”
Just then, Wang Zixuan swaggered in, looking incredibly handsome. But with a grin showing his teeth and a bunch of feathers stuck in his hair, he looked rather disheveled.
Xiao Mei remarked, “What happened? Went sneaking into a chicken coop?”
Wang Zixuan replied, “Nothing serious. Just caught a pigeon spirit. It said it couldn’t get a ticket for the festival and wanted to fly all the way home. We caught it.”
He swung his weapon slightly as if to prove a point.
Wang Zixuan then said, “Ah, aren’t you all going home for Mid-Autumn? Our supermarket’s welfare is pretty good.”
Xiao Deng said, “Of course. Everyone’s got a mother and father. We all want to reunite.”
Hearing this, Wang Zixuan, carrying a bottle of yogurt, sat down nearby.
He looked at Wang Zixuan, who immediately buried himself in his computer, and asked, “Big Sister, aren’t you going to get ready and go home for the festival?”
Wang Zixuan replied, “I went to visit Big Sister during the fifteenth of the seventh lunar month. I’m not going for Mid-Autumn. Besides, Teddy’s case report isn’t finished. Everything has to be archived. You wouldn’t believe how much trouble those spirits can cause. The sooner I finish, the less hassle when they come around.”
Xiao Deng asked, “Big Sister, can we leave early today?”
Before Wang Zixuan could answer, Xiao Mei, who handles assessments, spoke up.
Xiao Mei said, “You can leave if you want.”
Xiao Deng was grinning like a flower as he headed out but was immediately stopped by Xiao Mei’s next words.
Xiao Mei warned, “For every second you leave early, one month’s bonus gets deducted. My boyfriend’s waiting for me at the door, and I didn’t even say we could leave early. What’s the rush for a bunch of bachelors?”
Wang Zixuan said, “I’m still here. Should I give you my spot?”
Xiao Mei replied, “Big Sister, don’t cause trouble. Someone has to manage this bunch of brats! You’re so busy and kind to your subordinates, someone has to play the bad cop.”
Wang Zixuan didn’t say much but shot Xiao Mei a glare. Lately, things had been getting out of hand, but no one was really managing these people properly.
Wang Zixuan then looked back at Wang Zixuan. “What about you? Going home?”
Wang Zixuan glanced at Xiao Deng handing out mooncakes, then at Wang Zixuan, shook his head, and lowered his gaze to focus back on his thoughts.
Wang Zixuan asked, “Where are you planning to go? How about I treat you to dinner? Bring Xiao Si along.”
Wang Zixuan answered, “I have plans.”
Wang Zixuan asked, “What plans?”
Wang Zixuan said, “A party.”
Wang Zixuan asked, “Can I come?”
