Chapter 10: The Clown Turns Out to Be Myself
Time passed quickly. A little over a week later, after a series of diligent interviews, Jiang Xiaoguo, who had previously been unemployed, finally succeeded in securing an internship at Puling Capital. At the same time, Wang Yan, a self-proclaimed gaming enthusiast, found her own direction much as the story had foretold: she chose to continue living in the small courtyard and prepare for postgraduate entrance exams at the university.
That morning, Liang Shuang, who was attending new employee training at her company, was browsing her ex-boyfriend’s—known as the “Golf Guy”—social media, when she suddenly noticed a strikingly conspicuous user ID. From the moment she saw it, Liang Shuang immediately guessed that the owner of this ID was none other than the woman who had stolen her boyfriend. Although she had already broken up with Golf Guy, her pride still smoldered with resentment.
With this new discovery, Liang Shuang quickly devised a plan. “Xiao Li, come with me in a bit,” she instructed her assistant.
“Alright, Shuang!” replied Xiao Li, who was about the same age as Liang Shuang and had been working as an assistant for a year. A few days prior, after Liang Shuang had signed with the company as a rising artist, Xiao Li had been assigned as her personal assistant. Meanwhile, Duan Jiabao was now assisting another female artist at the company, though this artist was still an unknown figure in the entertainment industry.
About an hour later, Liang Shuang and her assistant Xiao Li “accidentally” encountered Golf Guy’s official girlfriend.
“Excuse me, are you Miss Yang?”
“Yes, I am.”
Receiving confirmation, Liang Shuang cast a sidelong glance, sizing her up.
“Is there something I can help you with?” Miss Yang appeared puzzled by Liang Shuang’s attitude.
“I’m here to tell you: no matter how good something belongs to someone else, it’s still theirs,” Liang Shuang said coldly. “If it’s not yours, don’t touch it. Those who walk by the river often will eventually slip and fall.”
Her pride was palpable; though she had completely parted ways with Chen Zhuo, the pain of being betrayed by a third party continued to gnaw at her.
Miss Yang, initially surprised and still pondering Liang Shuang’s identity, soon deduced who she was facing. With a gentle laugh, she spoke slowly.
“You must be Chen Zhuo’s former girlfriend, I suppose. You’ve come to interrogate me now?” she asked.
“Isn’t it only right to question someone who interferes in another’s relationship?”
“My dear, you might be mistaken. I met Chen Zhuo several years ago when I was studying abroad, and we’ve been engaged ever since. I only recently returned to the country, and though I suspected Chen Zhuo might have dated other women while I was away, there’s no doubt that I am the one who will marry him. So, if anyone should be questioning, it should be me.”
Her reply left Liang Shuang completely stunned. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
She had only wanted to vent her anger, but now, understanding the truth, she realized she herself was the interloper.
Seeing the situation unfold, Xiao Li quickly made sense of it and responded without hesitation, “Shuang, you have another appointment soon. We should go.”
Liang Shuang’s expression was awkward, but she made no protest. She turned and left with Xiao Li.
After such an incident, Liang Shuang lost all interest in returning to the company for training. She parted ways with Xiao Li and returned to her dormitory.
Xiao Li, meanwhile, promptly took out her phone and sent a detailed message to her boss, Wang Kun, recounting the events that had just transpired.
Upon receiving the message, Wang Kun replied swiftly, “Understood. Next time, inform me immediately if there’s any news.”
“Yes, boss!”
