“It seems Junior Brother Yang was telling the truth. We should leave here as soon as possible,” Ling Yunmei said as she walked to Yang Xiao’s side.
“Yang Xiao, were you really not deceiving me?” Hao Gang asked, confirming with Yang Xiao after hearing Ling Yunmei’s words.
“Of course, everything I said is true. I found this information in an ancient bestiary, and I believe it’s accurate. Senior Brother Hao Gang, didn’t you just confirm that the belly of the One-Eyed Sky Wolf is indeed its weak spot? That proves the records I read were correct,” Yang Xiao replied earnestly.
“In that case, let’s set out,” Qing Yuhe said, taking the lead. Although he had searched many places without finding a trace of the Spirit Auspice Grass, he was unwilling to give up so easily, so he pressed forward.
Yang Xiao and Ling Yunmei naturally followed. In such a harsh environment, the four of them could not afford to split up, especially since Yang Xiao suspected other One-Eyed Sky Wolves might track them. He became even more cautious. It didn’t matter where they went now; Yang Xiao only hoped that after leaving the scene of the slain wolf, the others wouldn’t find them easily, allowing them to safely escape this disaster.
Hao Gang had initially thought Yang Xiao was deceiving him, but when Ling Yunmei and Qing Yuhe fully believed Yang Xiao’s words, he became somewhat convinced as well. Especially, as Yang Xiao had said, since he knew the wolf’s weakness, he was likely familiar with its other habits too. In that case, Hao Gang’s impulsive actions might really bring trouble to the four of them.
Looking at the corpse of the One-Eyed Sky Wolf, Hao Gang felt reluctant to leave. The wolf’s body held many valuable materials—its claws, fur, all were precious, even suitable for refining lower-level spiritual tools. But pressed for time, Hao Gang had no chance to collect them. In the end, he could only grit his teeth and abandon the wolf’s corpse, following Qing Yuhe, Yang Xiao, and Ling Yunmei.
The four continued through the sea of sand. Soon, Yang Xiao warned, “This is bad. Although we’ve traveled a considerable distance, we haven’t escaped the tracking wolves. They’ve surrounded us, and there are quite a few. It seems a battle is unavoidable.”
“That’s right. The One-Eyed Sky Wolves are far more agile than us in the sand. They’ve indeed encircled us, and their numbers aren’t small. Prepare for battle, everyone. Stay together and be careful, or we’ll fall prey to these beasts,” Qing Yuhe cautioned, clearly sensing the wolves around them.
“Based on your estimate, Junior Brother Yang, how many wolves are there this time?” Ling Yunmei asked. Though she sensed their presence, she didn’t know their exact number and wanted Yang Xiao’s assessment to be prepared. Ling Yunmei now trusted Yang Xiao’s words deeply and relied on him greatly.
“There should be more than a hundred,” Yang Xiao replied. “Senior Sister Ling, stay close to me, just in case.”
Ling Yunmei nodded in agreement.
“There are that many?” Hao Gang’s face paled at Yang Xiao’s words. He had handled a single wolf, but a group would be much more troublesome. Felling the first one had cost him considerable effort, using all his skills. If there were more, he wasn’t confident. The wolves fiercely protected their weak spot, the belly, and rarely allowed any opportunity to exploit it. Moreover, a pack could coordinate attacks, their claws assisting each other, making it even harder to strike their vulnerability.
Hao Gang began to regret his earlier action. He shouldn’t have slain the first wolf, for now it had drawn so many upon them. But regret was useless; what was coming would come. Soon, the true faces of the One-Eyed Sky Wolf pack appeared around Yang Xiao and the others. There were indeed more than a hundred, all massive adults, clearly strong and fierce.
Their howls rose and fell in waves, merging into a threatening chorus. Before long, they launched their assault, surrounding Yang Xiao and his companions.
The four stood back to back, resisting the wolves’ relentless onslaught.
Yang Xiao drew his spear, fiercely stabbing at several attacking wolves. Yet, swift as he was, he could not match the combined force of so many claws. After several exchanges, Yang Xiao found himself at a disadvantage, forced to retreat as the wolves pressed him with overwhelming strength.
He glanced at the others—their situations were little better. If they relied solely on brute force, they were destined to suffer.
Fortunately, none of them were ordinary disciples. Soon, all revealed their skills, fighting the wolves with every technique at their disposal.
Hao Gang unleashed lightning spheres, and with surprise attacks from his halberd, managed to slay two wolves after a strenuous effort. But he paid dearly—his body bore several claw wounds, blood soaking his clothes. Yet he had no time to rest, forced to fight desperately, for if he failed to kill the wolves, he would surely be torn apart. The reality was cruel; this time he had no choice but to gamble his life in a death struggle.
The others fared little better. Ling Yunmei wielded the Four Seasons Sword Technique; Qing Yuhe unleashed the perfected Thunder-Cracking Fist; Yang Xiao infused his spear with the power of the Sword Soul Realm.
Still, the number of wolves was overwhelming. Each time one or two fell, several more surged forward to replace them. The beast tide rolled in like a wheel, drowning the four in its relentless advance. The savage spirit beasts grew ever fiercer, eager to tear the humans to shreds.
This, indeed, was a perilous battle.
