Chapter 134: The Winds of Wuan Are About to Rise
July, and the summer was at its peak.
In his own courtyard, Wei Wuji felt restless, almost to the point of driving himself mad. Even in the cool shade of the room, with Huan'er constantly fanning him from the side, he was still drenched in sweat.
"So hot!" Taking a sip of "herbal tea," Wei Wuji stretched his limbs and groaned.
Forget about air conditioning; there wasn't even an electric fan. Wei Wuji's sensory experience of this era grew even worse.
Actually, Wei Wuji was quite thick-skinned. How could he have the face to complain when Huan'er was dripping with sweat and hadn't uttered a single word?
In such scorching weather, there was an even more agonizing trial for Wei Wuji.
Before his eyes, a radiant beauty dressed in light gauze kept swaying back and forth. This kind of mental torture was cruel enough.
Given the situation, Wei Wuji had no choice but to change the subject and divert his thoughts elsewhere.
"Huan'er, do those wealthy households all have cellars? The kind where they store ice blocks and things like that?" Wei Wuji asked, tilting his head to look at Huan'er.
Without stopping her hands, Huan'er softly replied, "Yes, My Lord! The Gu family has them!"
Hearing Huan'er mention the Gu family stirred up memories for Wei Wuji.
Nearly two months had passed. Thinking of the past felt almost as if lifetimes separated him from it.
A voice involuntarily rose in his innermost thoughts: Was that person who "treated human lives like grass" really me?
"Huan'er, compared to now, you probably had a more comfortable life back at the Gu family, didn't you?" Seeing Huan'er covered in sweat, Wei Wuji felt a pang of pity.
Though it was merely a passing pity. As for telling Huan'er to stop, Wei Wuji would never agree to that.
To his surprise, upon hearing this, Huan'er immediately retorted, "My Lord, you are wrong! How could the Gu family compare to how it is now?"
Wei Wuji couldn't help but chuckle. "Then tell me, how is it better now?"
Huan'er wiped the sweat from her forehead and said with a hint of attachment, "When I was at the Gu family, if the master and young miss were even slightly displeased, they would fly into a rage and take their anger out on this humble servant..."
At this point, Huan'er looked at Wei Wuji, then lowered her head and continued, "Unlike My Lord, who is so considerate to this servant, and Madam doesn't look down on me either."
The little girl certainly knows how to speak, Wei Wuji thought to himself.
Slowly sitting up a bit from the recliner, Wei Wuji reached out to lift Huan'er's chin, looking into her pretty little face as he asked, "Are you saying that I am good to you..."
Being gazed at with such intimacy, Huan'er still found it hard to let go, her entire face turning burning red.
"Mn..." Huan'er nodded, her voice as faint as an ant's chirp.
Damn it, she's soul-stirringly alluring! Wei Wuji screamed inwardly, feeling his male hormones surging crazily.
Calm down... calm down... Wei Wuji struggled to suppress his wicked urges; it was already hot enough.
Yet as he tried to suppress his heated desires, he ended up pressing his head down as well. Instantly, Huan'er's alluring figure came right into Wei Wuji's view.
Wei Wuji, whose wicked desires could be stirred up by just a face, faced with Huan'er's all-encompassing assault, instantly...
That vaguely visible... that impossible-to-conceal... that...
Everything seemed to be crying out to him: Come quickly and explore! Come quickly and develop!
Wei Wuji swallowed hard, took Huan'er's hand, and said, "Huan'er, let's play a game!"
Hearing this, Huan'er slowly raised her head and softly asked, "My Lord, what game?"
"Of course, playing... creating life!"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Wei Wuji pulled Huan'er straight into his arms, his hands beginning to wander mischievously all over her body.
Seeing Wei Wuji pull this trick yet again, Huan'er had long since grown accustomed to it. Over the days since their return, she had already experienced it many times.
Before long, Wei Wuji stripped her bare and pressed down upon her.
This time, two burning bodies truly collided with one another.
Both of them were well-versed in the routine, and naturally, they had a thoroughly wonderful time.
...
Outside, the scorching sun remained as fierce as ever, seemingly growing even hotter.
Inside Wu'an City, along the bustling streets, there were far fewer pedestrians.
The vast city of Wu'an seemed to have suddenly fallen silent.
In the shops along the road, the shouts used to attract customers on ordinary days vanished amidst the oncoming heatwaves.
Only the shop assistants inside the counters remained, fighting off exhaustion and yawning incessantly.
Yet every matter had two sides. Compared to the suffering of ordinary folk, the wealthy led a completely different existence.
They had ice blocks stored from the previous year, meticulously attentive maids, and melons and fruits laid out to dispel the heat...
The nobles squinted their eyes, continuing to enjoy life under the service of their maids. The heatwave seemed to have very little impact on their luxurious lives.
Quiet... everything was quiet, because movement meant sweating, and sweating meant an even more agonizing summer.
Amidst this serenity, outside the East Gate of Wu'an City, a commotion rang out.
The first to notice the disturbance was the dozing city gate officer.
Drooling as he lay slumped over his desk, he was jolted awake by the vibrations rippling through his eardrums.
"Who the hell is courting death, waking up Your Lordship!" Wiping away his drool, the officer stood up and cursed.
Afterwards, beneath the blazing sun overhead, he walked up to the ramparts.
By then, the vibrations had grown distinct, and three galloping horses entered the officer's line of sight.
Urged on by their riders, the horses bolted rapidly toward the city gate. It was the sound of these hooves that had awakened the officer.
"Which divine being is this again..." the gate officer muttered as he gazed into the distance. Based on his years of experience, these were undoubtedly government couriers.
Sure enough, as the riders drew closer, the garments they wore were precisely the robes of the state of Wei's soldiers, and one of them was even holding high a banner.
Yet upon that very banner, the gate officer beheld an unbelievable sight...
Embroidered upon the flag was a divine, extraordinary, fierce, and domineering mythical beast.
It was a Qilin, the exclusive emblem of the Marquis of Wei...
Terrified, the gate officer scrambled down the ramparts to welcome the sovereign's envoy.
Fortunately, he was quick-handed and nimble; by the time he reached the gate archway, the riders were still some distance away.
"Clatter, clatter, clatter... clatter, clatter, clatter..."
The three cavalrymen finally charged into the gate tunnel. The gate officer hurried forward with a smile, followed by two guards carrying cooled tea.
"You've had a hard journey, Envoy. Come down and have a sip of water first!" the officer greeted him with a smiling face.
Regrettably, his enthusiasm was met with just two words.
"Get out of the way!" the mounted courier snapped harshly, then dug his spurs into the horse's flanks and accelerated past.
Upon entering the city, the riders did not halt. Instead, they raised their voices and shouted at the top of their lungs:
"His Lordship has heavily defeated the Qi army and will soon return in triumph..."
"The Qi people have been utterly defeated, His Lordship returns in triumph soon..."
"His Lordship has heavily defeated the Qi army and will soon return in triumph..."
Stirred by these cries, the entire street instantly came alive.
The Marquis of Wei was the spiritual pillar of all his subjects. During the time he led the army on campaign, the common folk of Wu'an City had always felt as though something was missing.
Hearing that their sovereign was returning, and returning in the glory of a great victory, excited the populace all the more.
As the riders pressed forward, more streets were ignited, and the silence of Wu'an was gradually shattered.
People burst into cheers without restraint. The return of the Marquis of Wei also meant that many husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers would soon be coming home.
Gradually, the news of the Marquis's triumphant return spread further and further, until every single person in Wu'an City knew of it...
