The Discordant Quartet
At noon the following day, Qiao Wei, Rhine, Luo Chen, and Luo Xuan set out once again to search the streets. Rhine’s sharp gaze frequently, whether intentionally or not, fell upon Qiao Wei; her once beautiful violet eyes were now brimming with disdain. Dissatisfied, she addressed Qiao Wei, who was meditating with her eyes closed, deeply focused: “Are you even capable of finding it? It’s been ages and there’s not a single—”
“I see it!” Qiao Wei suddenly opened her eyes. “I see a lake. The box is at the bottom of the lake.”
Luo Chen’s elegant brows drew together slightly. “So…how do we get there?”
Qiao Wei scratched her head, a little embarrassed. “I… I’m not sure how to explain it, but I’ll try to bring you all along.”
Rhine gave a cold snort, her face full of contempt. “Absolutely useless.”
“Why don’t you lead the way then, since you’re so capable?” Qiao Wei met Rhine’s eyes unflinchingly, undaunted even though Rhine was a bit taller. She hated Rhine’s inexplicable hostility toward her.
“You!” Rhine’s face flushed red, then pale. She suddenly raised her hand, intending to strike Qiao Wei. In that instant, Luo Chen caught Rhine’s arm, and at the same time, Luo Xuan pulled Qiao Wei a few meters away.
“Don’t go too far!” Luo Chen’s voice carried a hint of anger.
Rhine couldn’t save face; tears welled up and spilled down her cheeks, making her look so pitiable that it tugged at one’s heart. Luo Xuan walked over, elegantly handing her a tissue, his tone tinged with helplessness: “Let’s stop this. Our main purpose is to find the box, and there’s still a powerful enemy out there we know nothing about. Don’t argue anymore, my head’s splitting.”
Qiao Wei no longer looked at Rhine and began to walk forward, relying on her intuition. The remaining three followed closely behind her, none of them noticing the pair of sinister green eyes gleaming with wicked intent from behind a tall building.
“We’re here.” When Qiao Wei saw the expanse of blue lake, the anger she’d felt because of Rhine vanished completely. She stepped forward eagerly, wanting to take a closer look, but Luo Xuan grabbed her arm. “Careful, there might be danger. Don’t go over yet.”
Remembering the lesson from last time, Qiao Wei halted and glanced at Luo Xuan with gratitude.
“Are you two done chatting?” Luo Chen looked at them coldly, an odd pang of jealousy rising in his chest. “Let’s figure out how to get the box out.”
Qiao Wei’s cheeks flushed. She turned to Luo Chen, asking uncertainly, “So what do we do now?”
“I’ll go.”
“I’ll go.”
Luo Chen and Luo Xuan spoke in unison.
Qiao Wei looked at them teasingly. “You really are brothers—so in sync.”
Luo Chen glared at Qiao Wei, cleared his throat, and said awkwardly, “I’ll go. You stay here and protect them.”
Before Luo Xuan could reply, Rhine’s sweetly cloying voice suddenly chimed in, “I’m going with Brother Luo Chen!”
“Just don’t cause trouble,” Luo Chen muttered, tossing the words over his shoulder as he strode toward the lakeshore without a backward glance. Rhine hurried after him.
