Chapter 69: A Director Who Shuns Security Work Is Not a Good Director
Although Cui Quan had indeed been busy these past few days, there was not the slightest trace of weariness on his face. On the contrary, compared to when he was a security guard, he looked even more spirited and energetic. Perhaps the job was more physically demanding, but now, as the second-in-command of the entire security department, he felt more exhilarated than ever.
Seeing that Cui Quan was genuinely enjoying his current work, Hua Tianyu nodded with satisfaction and instructed him to keep a close eye on Cheng Feng. Indeed, Hua Tianyu had dismissed all of Cheng Feng’s trusted aides, but had deliberately not fired Cheng Feng himself. His purpose was simple: he wanted to draw out the power behind Cheng Feng.
During the incidents involving Situ the Thief and the security system, Hua Tianyu had realized that there was definitely something wrong with Cheng Feng, but he did not know who was backing him. Therefore, he intended to use Cheng Feng as bait.
Now the bait had been set, and he was just waiting for the fish to bite. The only question was when the fish would bite, and how big it would be…
After making his rounds through the Swan Tower, inspecting his domain, Hua Tianyu began yet another round of idling. It occurred to him that he hadn’t seen Wang Hong in several days, so he decided to pay a visit to the Human Resources Department.
As soon as he stepped out of the security office and entered the lobby, he saw Wei Xueying walking toward him.
“Xueying, good morning!”
Wei Xueying fell silent.
“Xueying, morning! Xueying!”
“Morning,” Wei Xueying replied, giving him a glare.
Being called “Xueying” by this scoundrel in front of so many people was the last thing she wanted, but if she ignored him, he’d just keep calling her, and soon everyone in the entire lobby would hear it. Though she was seething inside, she had no choice but to greet him.
To her surprise, after the greeting, Hua Tianyu stepped right up beside her to wait for the executive elevator.
“This is my executive elevator. Could you stop taking my elevator every time?” Wei Xueying asked.
“You have the authority to dismiss me as security manager, but you cannot interfere with a competent manager carrying out his duties, which includes patrolling every part of the building—even your executive elevator,” Hua Tianyu replied righteously.
Patrolling the building? More like wandering around out of sheer boredom, Wei Xueying thought to herself.
“What kind of security manager are you? You do nothing all day but loiter around the building!” Wei Xueying’s tone was icy as she rebuked him.
“My true aspiration is to be the president’s bodyguard and chauffeur. Security manager is not my ambition, so please don’t use that title to sully my lofty ideals.”
Wei Xueying was speechless.
A lofty ideal to become the company president’s driver?
Wei Xueying rolled her eyes at him in exasperation.
“Fine! I’ll fulfill your dream!” she said through gritted teeth.
“Really? Then I’ll go to HR to process the paperwork immediately!” Hua Tianyu, delighted at the prospect of resigning as security manager, was ready to act at once.
“What paperwork? I agreed to let you be my driver, but I didn’t say you could quit being security manager!” Wei Xueying said sternly, secretly pleased at regaining the upper hand.
“What? I protest! Are you planning to work me like a mule?” Hua Tianyu complained indignantly.
“Protest denied!” Wei Xueying declared, stepping into the elevator and frantically pressing the door-close button. She was determined not to let Hua Tianyu into her elevator.
But the speed at which the elevator doors closed was simply no match for Hua Tianyu.
Seeing him step into her private elevator again, Wei Xueying bit her lower lip and turned her face away, refusing to acknowledge him.
“Hey, I’m talking to you—the one with the crooked neck, your left eyeball hanging by your mouth, tongue drooping to your chest. If she can’t see you, stop blowing on her hair or you’ll scare her!” Hua Tianyu said with a mischievous grin.
The same old routine, not a word changed, Wei Xueying thought. This time, she simply closed her eyes, determined to ignore whatever nonsense he spouted.
Clang!
A sudden, loud noise made Wei Xueying’s heart leap. She gripped the handrail behind her tightly.
Surely not again… Was the elevator broken?
When she opened her eyes, she saw Hua Tianyu bent over, slowly picking up a security-issue rubber truncheon from the floor. The noise had been the truncheon hitting the ground.
Wei Xueying was speechless.
He must have done it on purpose.
Wei Xueying stamped her foot in frustration. “Hua Tianyu, you scoundrel! Would it kill you not to scare me?”
Hua Tianyu finished picking up the truncheon and looked up with an innocent expression. “Too much work—my hands are tired.”
Wei Xueying took a deep breath, then another.
“This afternoon, you officially start your job as my driver. First, you’ll take me to the hospital,” she said softly, afraid that if she raised her voice, she’d end up yelling at him.
“No problem. Would you like a leisurely ride, or shall I go full speed?” Hua Tianyu asked with a grin.
“Just a normal speed!” The memory of her carsickness still made Wei Xueying’s heart race.
“You got it!”
Hua Tianyu snapped his fingers and strode out of the elevator, leaving behind a suave silhouette for Wei Xueying to see.
The twentieth-floor Human Resources Department. The office was already open, with some early arrivals, though neither Liang Hui nor Wang Hong had arrived yet.
Hua Tianyu sat down at Wang Hong’s desk. Barely had he taken his seat when Wang Hong walked in, her face clouded with worry.
“Hua Tianyu!”
At the sight of him, her expression brightened instantly, though Hua Tianyu did not miss the lingering shadow in her eyes.
“What brings you here?”
“Aren’t you glad to see me?” Hua Tianyu asked, gazing warmly into her eyes. Although she looked happy, she couldn’t quite conceal the worry in her gaze.
“I’m glad,” Wang Hong replied softly, lowering her head shyly.
“Are you blaming me for not coming to see you these past few days?” Hua Tianyu gently took her hand.
“No,” Wang Hong shook her head. “It’s not your fault.”
“Then can you tell me what’s wrong? I don’t like seeing you unhappy,” Hua Tianyu said tenderly.
Wang Hong hesitated, then finally said, “It’s nothing serious, really. It’s my younger brother—last night he got into trouble again.”
“I’ve told him not to hang around with that crowd, but he just won’t listen, and there’s nothing I can do.”
“Did something happen last night? Was he hurt?” Hua Tianyu’s eyes narrowed with concern.
“No, not really. From what he said, someone on the other side was injured, but he and his friends were fine. Still, I can’t help but worry,” Wang Hong sighed.
Her brother was a disappointment—not only a poor student, but also constantly keeping company with delinquents. Wang Hong was always on edge, afraid something might happen to him one day. She worried herself sick over him.
“Don’t worry too much. Everyone goes through a rebellious phase. If you’re too strict, you’ll only push him further. Just make sure he knows his limits, and he’ll be alright,” Hua Tianyu comforted her softly.
