Chapter 149: A Pair of Despicable Wretches!
When Zhang Hongman and Zhang Xun caught sight of Qin Mu, their hearts skipped a beat before hammering violently against their ribs, making their heads spin with dizziness.
Had Qin Mu not just downed several cups of liquor and passed out from the drugged wine?
Why was he here right now?!
Furthermore, Qin Mu had walked over from the main hall without making the slightest sound.
Was he a man or a ghost?
"This is my grandfather's room! What are you doing here?" Zhang Hongman asked, her eyes darting shiftily as she spoke in a flustered panic.
"Just passing by." Qin Mu glanced at the ancestral contract in his hand and shook his head inwardly.
"That belongs to our Zhang family! Give it back to me this instant!"
Zhang Hongman shrieked, thrusting her hands forward as she lunged at him.
However, Qin Mu merely leaned against the doorframe, shifting his body slightly to the side. Zhang Hongman lunged straight into empty air, crashing face-first onto the floor like a dog eating dirt, slamming her chin against the ground and shattering half her teeth.
"This belongs to Elder Zhang, not you," Qin Mu said.
Nursing her throbbing mouth with a grimace, Zhang Hongman glared at Qin Mu with a foul expression and cursed, "What's the difference? That old bastard is going to die anyway, so won't everything just get passed down to us children?"
"That's right!"
"Don't go too far! This is our family's ancestral contract. What kind of logic is it for an outsider like you to hold onto it?"
Zhang Xun trembled with rage, too intimidated to make a physical move, and could only vent his anger through muffled curses.
"If you hadn't spoken, I would have almost forgotten about you."
As if only just remembering Zhang Xun, Qin Mu raised his eyes to look at him. That single sentence caused a sharp pain to lance through Zhang Xun's chest, but Qin Mu's next words made his heart stop beating altogether.
"I never expected you to be so vicious."
"With the instant-acting dosage you mixed into that wine, were you trying to take Old Master Zhang's life right then and there?"
Faced with Qin Mu, Zhang Xun's gaze instantly turned icy, and the palpable killing intent radiating from him broke Zhang Xun out in a cold sweat.
"Shut the fuck up! Stop talking nonsense in here!"
Zhang Xun panicked instantly. Even as he roared back, his eyes darted nervously in all directions, terrified that Old Master Zhang and Zhang Wanqing in the main hall would overhear.
Because every single word Qin Mu said was the absolute truth!
Old Master Zhang's health was already precarious. Once he drank the drug Zhang Xun had mixed into the wine, his organs would likely begin failing within a week or two, leaving him bedridden and gravely ill.
By that time, wouldn't everything else in the household besides the ancestral contract—including Zhang Zhengyuan's funeral savings—belong entirely to them?
"Give me back my ancestral contract!"
Zhang Hongman scrambled to her feet. Having learned her lesson, she lunged forward with outstretched hands, aiming directly for Qin Mu's throat!
This ancestral contract was of paramount importance; even if she had to kill Qin Mu, she had to get her hands on it!
However, she had clearly miscalculated.
Qin Mu stood motionless in his tracks. Before her claw-like hands could even reach him, she felt a sharp pain at the back of her neck as someone hoisted her entirely off the ground from behind.
Zhang Xun stared in astonishment and saw that the burly man who had directly downed over half a bottle of Wumu liquor—unfazed by the drugs—was now standing right behind Qin Mu.
What kind of monsters were these two?
"Good grief, what an absolute pest."
"Get lost! Don't let me ever see your faces again!"
With a flick of his arm, Wumu tossed Zhang Hongman straight out the door. She tumbled across the ground several times, her face caked in dust.
Wumu then turned his head toward Zhang Xun, his voice cold. "Are you going to let me throw you out, or will you crawl out on your own?"
"Fine... You win!"
Realizing the situation was dire, Zhang Xun immediately prepared to make his escape.
Before leaving, Wumu felt a lingering wave of indignation and delivered a vicious kick, sending Zhang Xun flying through the air to crash heavily onto the ground with a shrill shriek of pain.
"Bah, animals!" Wumu muttered with lingering resentment.
Qin Mu shrugged, neatly folded his jacket, and placed it back into the wardrobe alongside the ancestral contract.
"Old Master Zhang truly has lived a bitter life," Wumu sighed.
However, now that they were aware of the situation, they certainly wouldn't stand by with folded arms.
After leaving the room, Qin Mu had Wumu fetch several cups of plain water, took a few mental-clarity pills he always carried on his person, dissolved them into the water, and had the three people who had been drugged unconscious drink it.
Meanwhile, the two members of the Zhang family, who had been tossed out one after another by Wumu, fled to their car covered in dust and dirt.
"We didn't get the ancestral contract! What are we going to do?!" Zhang Hongman panicked.
The mere thought that something rightfully hers had been pocketed by an outsider like Qin Mu filled her with boiling rage.
Zhang Xun wore an equally volatile expression. The kick Wumu had given him was still hurting so much that he could barely sit straight.
"I never expected that dead girl Wanqing to find herself a helper. She must have her eyes on the ancestral contract too, and was just pretending not to care on the surface," Zhang Xun speculated.
Hearing this, Zhang Hongman had a sudden epiphany. "Hmph! That ungrateful wretch told us not to rush about the inheritance, but she had her sights set on it all along, wanting to swallow it all by herself!"
"We are the eldest brother and sister! No matter how the inheritance is divided after that old man kicks the bucket, there's no way that contract will ever go to her!"
Nodding in agreement, Zhang Xun said, "Let's go find Young Master Xu first and see what he has to say about this."
With that, he started the engine and drove off.
Ten minutes later, Zhang Xun's car pulled up in front of an imposing and luxurious nightclub.
Although this mountainous region was rather remote, thanks to Jiangcheng's rapid development in recent years, the surrounding areas had all experienced a boom, giving rise to all kinds of industries.
