Chapter 170: Mental State Assessment
Right at that moment, Ryder, who had finished checking the left side of the second floor, also entered the room.
"Call an ambulance, quickly."
The white man's face bore a striking resemblance to Avar Miller. Considering the chaotic state of the crime scene, Roan immediately deduced that the man was of great value and could not be allowed to die here.
"OK."
Seeing Ryder press his communicator and begin to briefly describe the situation on the scene, Roan tilted his head in thought, took out his phone from his pocket, found a number, and dialed it.
---
A few hours later, inside the office area of Investigation Squad 5.
After double-checking several times to ensure that Roan's body was indeed unharmed, Mona let out a long sigh of relief.
Giving Roan's arm a hard slap, Mona sat back down at her workstation and read out the relevant information concerning the white man Roan had saved:
"That guy's name is Edwin Miller, a distant cousin of Avar Miller.
He is forty years old, served in the military in his youth, and has no record of imprisonment since returning to the Federation.
However, his recent financial situation has been terrible. Because of his ex-wife and son, he needs to pay three thousand dollars in alimony every month.
Yet, he lost his job just last month."
Hearing Mona's account, Roan chuckled and sat back down in his chair, while Lacey hurried over, threw her arms around Mona's slender waist, and whispered:
"Hey, Mona, Ryder was also a participant in that shootout just now. Aren't you going to ask about his condition?"
Mona rolled her eyes, gently broke free from Lacey's embrace, glared at Roan, and said in a low voice:
"Ryder has Yvonne to worry about him."
Hearing this, the smile on Lacey's face grew even wider. Just as she was about to speak, Augustus suddenly pushed open the door and walked in.
Behind him followed two expressionless white individuals—a man and a woman—both dressed in business suits and carrying file folders.
Upon seeing the man and the woman, all the agents of Investigation Squad 5 frowned and stood up from their seats, casting their gazes toward Ryder and Roan.
Mainly toward Roan.
"It's the Human Resources Security Division."
Lacey furrowed her brows. "Why are they here already?"
Much like the Internal Affairs Division in the NYPD, whose job is to monitor police officers and penalize those who violate regulations and laws, the Security Division under the Human Resources branch exists to monitor agents and supervisors within the FBI.
Neither of them is a popular department.
The fact that Roan and Ryder—two senior FBI agents who were not members of the SWAT team—had together eliminated a large number of enemies would naturally prompt the Security Division to question them afterward to assess their mental states.
The agents of Investigation Squad 5 had been mentally prepared for this.
However, such interrogations usually took place after a case was solved, rather than right now, while the case was only half-finished.
"What on earth is going on?"
The agents of Investigation Squad 5 simultaneously cast questioning looks at Augustus.
Mona also directed a worried gaze toward Roan.
Augustus didn't say much. He simply exchanged a glance with Roan, then waved his hand:
"Roan, Ryder, go with them."
"Understood, Boss."
Hearing Augustus's words, Roan and Ryder exchanged glances and nodded in unison.
Patting Mona on the back, Roan flashed a reassuring smile at the other agents and calmly walked out of the office area of Investigation Squad 5.
Watching the retreating figures of Roan and Ryder, Lacey clenched her fists with a solemn expression.
Looking back at Mona, she discovered that Mona had already returned to her seat and resumed typing rapidly on her keyboard.
Lacey was slightly stunned at the sight and hurriedly asked:
"Mona, you..."
"Trust Roan."
The moment she saw the smile on Roan's face, Mona had put her worries to rest.
She knew that Roan never did anything without preparation.
That being said, Mona, just like Lacey, kept her eyes fixed tightly on the door of Investigation Squad 5.
---
Human Resources Department, Security Division, Interrogation Room.
The Security Division was located right next to the Training Division. As Roan stepped out of the elevator, he even caught sight of Senior Agent Old York from the Training Division.
Sitting in a chair and looking at the agent across the table, Roan wore a peculiar expression.
In the past, he was always the one interrogating others. Being interrogated by someone else now felt rather novel.
"Hello, Special Agent Roan Greenwood."
The suited white man placed a folder on the table and expressionlessly introduced himself and the woman:
"My name is Nodin, and this is Netty. We're from the Human Resources Security Division."
"Hello."
Roan smiled and nodded.
After a brief pleasantry, Nodin quickly cut to the chase.
"Agent Greenwood, according to the post-incident investigation by the Forensic Evidence Division, there were a total of thirteen corpses at the crime scene, nine of which were killed by you. Is that correct?"
Counting the two bodies that received finishing shots, the number was correct.
However, Roan did not answer, nor did he nod. Instead, he crossed his legs, smiled, and asked:
"And then?"
Seeing Roan's posture, Netty's expression shifted. Her eyes widened, and she said sharply:
"Special Agent Roan, you—"
"Ahem."
Before Netty could finish, Nodin gave a couple of coughs, then continued with a deadpan expression:
"In view of the unusually high number of enemies you neutralized in a short period during this case, we are now required to conduct an assessment of your mental state.
Please listen carefully to the questions I am about to ask, and simply answer Yes or No."
With that, Nodin opened the folder, pulled out a piece of paper, and read the first question.
Seeing this, Netty on the side opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but didn't dare utter it.
Gazing intently into the face of Agent Nodin across the table and recalling the look Augustus had given him earlier, Roan remained silent for a moment before suddenly bursting into a smile. He uncrossed his legs and began answering the other party's questions.
A few minutes later, Agent Nodin nodded in satisfaction, drew a large checkmark on the paper, stood up, and extended his hand to Roan:
"Congratulations, Agent Roan. You have passed this mental state assessment. Thank you very much for your cooperation."
"Thank you, Agent Nodin. You've had a hard time too."
Reaching out to shake the man's hand, Roan glanced sideways at Netty, whose face was flushed with suppressed anger, and walked out of the interrogation room with a smile, pushing the door open.
In the hallway, Ryder had been waiting for a long time. Seeing Roan emerge, he hurried forward.
Based on past experience, Ryder had figured he would be interrogated for at least a few hours.
He couldn't understand why this time was so brief; it felt like he had barely sat down before he was already out.
Inside the interrogation room, looking through the glass door at the sight of Roan patting Ryder on the shoulder and walking toward the elevator with a wide smile, Netty finally reached her breaking point. She turned around, her face flushed red, and demanded:
"Sir! What is the meaning of this?! This completely violates our regulations!"
Casually stuffing Roan's mental assessment questionnaire back into the folder, Nodin raised his head expressionlessly at Netty's question, pulled out his phone, and handed it to her.
"This is the direct number for our Deputy Director."
"..."
Netty's expression stiffened, and she froze in place.
Not stopping there, Nodin swiped down on the call log and pointed to another number, saying:
"And this call is from Washington."
Hearing this, Netty gave a start and her eyes widened in shock...
Seeing Roan and Ryder return to Investigation Squad 5 so quickly, Mona instantly let out a sigh of relief, while Lacey and the others stood up in utter astonishment:
"How did you guys get back so fast?"
Hearing this, Roan slumped back down into his chair and said with a disgruntled expression:
"What, you wanted me to stay in there for a few days?"
"I didn't mean that..."
Lacey hurriedly waved her hands. At that very moment, Mona suddenly turned around and announced:
"Everyone! I've tracked down the identities of those Black men Roan eliminated!
Not only that, but Edwin Miller just woke up. He says he has crucial intelligence and desperately wants to see the FBI right away!"
