Chapter 129: My House Is Actually Quite Large
The next day, Investigation Team 5.
"Good morning, Mona."
Roan walked in pushing the office door open, carrying a bag of breakfast. Besides Lacey, who was sleeping with her head on her desk, he saw Mona sitting at her workstation, typing away at her keyboard.
After things concluded yesterday, Lacey went to the hospital to stand guard over Jaquel, while Roan drove his Chevrolet home to sleep and rest.
"Morning, Roan."
Sitting down at his desk, Roan took a bite of his breakfast and tilted his head, asking in confusion:
"Mona, why are you here so early today?"
Usually, Mona and August would arrive at the very last minute.
"I actually came in last night."
Hearing Roan's question, Mona shook her head, explaining that after everything ended yesterday, she had hesitated for a long time before deciding to clear out everything in her apartment before moving back in.
Therefore, Mona had driven to the Jacob Federal Building last night and spent the night in the Investigation Team 5 office area.
Speaking of which, Mona asked in passing:
"Roan, could you introduce me to the renovation company that remodeled your apartment?"
The small apartment Mona had purchased was a move-in-ready unit that had been renovated previously. The incident with Jaquel had sparked her desire to renovate it.
"No problem."
Roan waved his hand, agreeing to such a small request, and then asked with a smile:
"Mona, are you planning to sleep in the office again tonight? My place is actually quite spacious..."
Upon hearing Roan's words, Mona didn't answer, merely rolling her eyes at him.
Shortly after, the members of Investigation Team 5 arrived one by one. August, as usual, walked through the doors of the team office right on time. Following his customary routine, August gave a brief overview of the day's tasks, and the agents began their work.
There were no new cases assigned to Investigation Team 5 today; the agents' work consisted of handling the follow-up procedures for the car accident and the bombing case. In any country, solving a case doesn't end with catching the perpetrator. There is a mountain of follow-up work: writing case reports, contacting judges, setting trial dates, liaising with the District Attorney's office, coordinating with prisons, processing evidence, and so on.
Compared to the NYPD, the FBI's review speed for these tasks is faster, and the procedures are much more streamlined. Nevertheless, when all the various formalities are added up, they still amount to quite a lot. If the entire process of handling a case were divided into ten steps, finding clues and capturing the culprit would only account for the first four.
Those four steps are the most difficult, but the subsequent six steps are the most excruciating. Regardless of the country, the bureaucracy is the same: tedious and complex.
However, Roan rarely participates in these follow-up tasks. Since he joined Investigation Team 5 and successfully solved his first case, the writing of case reports has always been handled by whichever team member had the time. Mona, in particular, wrote the most for him.
As the team leader, August spent most of his time after a case dealing with expense reports and filing the case dossiers. Lacey and Ryder spent more time guarding prisoners and coordinating with prisons. William and the other technical staff were responsible for contacting judges, helping prisoners apply for legal counsel, setting court dates, communicating with the District Attorney, and processing evidence.
Of course, no one in Investigation Team 5 complained about this arrangement. The reason was simple: Roan was able to lead them to solve cases every time. Before Roan arrived, Investigation Team 5 had just been formed, and their clearance rate was hardly worth mentioning. The agents only earned their base salaries, and they had never seen a bonus.
But since Roan’s arrival, the clearance rate of Investigation Team 5 had skyrocketed. Although their salaries remained the same, the bonuses suddenly appeared, and they frequently received gratuities after solving cases. Everyone in Investigation Team 5 knew exactly where this money came from and why their quality of life had improved.
So, although the agents were currently busy writing reports and making phone calls while Roan sat at his desk staring blankly at his computer screen, creating a visible disparity, no one in the office complained—not even behind his back.
Roan was unaware of what the team members were thinking; he was currently focused on the screen in front of him. For yesterday's events, the system gave him an "Excellent" rating, and the rewards were exactly as he expected: three vials of serum. They were a vial of Stamina Serum, a vial of Strength Serum, and a vial of Agility Serum.
They were all serums Roan liked. He had realized by now that Hemostasis and Antidote serums could indeed save his life in a critical moment, but being injured was never a good thing.
How could he avoid getting hurt? Naturally, by having thick skin, high attack power, and fast reflexes! To achieve these, he needed the support of Stamina, Strength, and Agility serums.
Thinking of this, the corners of Roan’s mouth turned up slightly, and a glint of light appeared in his eyes. After all, the Stamina Serum also had some unexpected benefits in other areas...
"Roan! Come here for a moment."
Just as Roan was looking down at the Night Vision Serum in the system, considering whether to try a vial tonight to see what kind of attributes it might add, August's voice suddenly cut through.
Looking up in the direction of the voice, he saw August standing at the door of the Investigation Team 5 conference room, beckoning him over with an elderly white man in a suit.
The three of them entered the conference room and sat down. August raised his hand and gestured:
"Roan, this is Mr. Nicola, an attorney."
Roan looked puzzled but still smiled and extended his hand:
"Hello, Mr. Nicola. My name is Roan Greenwood. You can just call me Roan."
"Hello, Agent Roan."
The elderly white attorney smiled, shook Roan's hand, and then, while pulling a folder out of his briefcase, said with a smile:
"I am the representative attorney for the six banks that were robbed by the robbers some time ago. I am here today to have you sign a document."
Hearing the man's identity, Roan's eyebrows arched. He looked down at the folder being passed to him. Sure enough, it was exactly what Verinice had spoken to him about earlier: the document hiring him as a security consultant for the six banks.
Right in the middle of the document, it clearly stated that the security consultant position would pay $2,000 per month from each bank. Combined, that was $12,000 per month for all six banks. Of course, this money wouldn't be taken for nothing; Roan would have to provide improvement suggestions and equipment upgrade plans for the security of these six banks.
Even so, Roan's eyes brightened instantly. After being promoted to a Senior Special Agent, his monthly salary was only $3,000.
After carefully checking the contract and finding no issues, Roan signed his name.
After Attorney Nicola left the conference room, Roan turned his gaze to August. Roan remembered Verinice saying that someone would only come to have him sign this contract when the banks were ready to pay the gratuity. Now that the contract was in front of him, that meant the bank's gratuity...
Seeing the look in Roan's eyes, August grinned as well.
