Chapter 124: Where Exactly Is Jaquel’s Hidden Location?

"That Thomas in the interrogation room is actually named Demonte Adams."

Seeing Verinis's gaze, Mona, who was sitting nearby, tapped away at her keyboard before explaining: "His background is similar to Jaquel's. They were both soldiers wronged by John King."

"OK."

Upon hearing Mona's words, Verinis nodded. She tilted her head toward the group, signaling that the case was closed. An arrest warrant for Jaquel would be issued shortly, and since it was almost time to go home, she told everyone to wrap up their work and head out.

"Thank you, boss!" The agents of the Fifth Investigation Unit cheered in response.

Verinis smiled faintly at the sight. She cast a satisfied glance at Roan before turning and walking away.

Mona raised an eyebrow, tilted her head toward August, and asked curiously: "Boss, are we still going to interrogate Demonte?"

August patted his large belly without saying a word. Previously, letting Roan and Ryder arrest Demonte and bring him in was partly because the case belonged to the Fifth Investigation Unit, and partly out of fear that if the CIA caught the culprit before them, the upper hand would shift. But the case wouldn't belong to the Fifth Unit tomorrow, and Verinis had already declared it closed, so...

"Interrogating him wouldn't hurt."

After thinking for a few seconds, a smile appeared on August's dark face: "Rumor has it there's a million-dollar bounty on Jaquel's arrest warrant. If you can get the location of Jaquel's hideout out of Demonte..."

Hearing this, Mona's eyes lit up instantly. She quickly turned to look at Roan beside her. Seeing her expression, Roan grinned. After taking a sip of his coffee, he walked into the interrogation room with Mona.

Forty minutes later, Roan and Mona stepped out of the interrogation room.

"Why did it take so long?" Lacey, sitting at her desk, stretched and pointed at the clock at the front of the Fifth Unit's office area, laughing: "We're off in five minutes. Did you get anything useful out of him?"

"No."

Mona shook her head in frustration, threw her notebook onto the desk, and let out a long sigh. Lacey raised an eyebrow and turned her gaze to Roan.

Facing Lacey's questioning look, a helpless Roan tossed his folder aside, took a sip of coffee, and began to explain. During the interrogation, Demonte hadn't said a single word from start to finish. Not only that, but Roan had seen no spark of life in Demonte's eyes. The man was clearly in a state of mind where he had achieved his vengeance and had no regrets about dying. Coupled with the information Mona had dug up—that Demonte's parents were dead, he had no siblings, no wife, and no children—he was a completely isolated individual.

Faced with someone so unattached, Roan and Mona had tried every method, but they couldn't get Demonte to talk. Eventually, they reached a consensus: the bounty was high, but it wasn't worth the effort.

Firstly, Jaquel's counter-surveillance and organizational skills were formidable. He hadn't shown his face in either the car accident or the bombing. When William had previously investigated the surveillance footage from the building where the ambulance driver lived and its surroundings, he had only caught a glimpse of Jaquel entering the building. After leaving, Jaquel’s trail vanished completely, as if he had evaporated into thin air. Where he was now, only Demonte knew, and Demonte wouldn't speak. Even if he did, the location might not even be where Jaquel was hiding. In a densely populated place like New York, without the advanced big-data analysis of the future, finding Jaquel in a short time was simply impossible.

Secondly, John King had sent Jaquel and his comrades to their deaths for money... Honestly, if that had happened to Roan, he would have chosen revenge too. The only problem was that in the process of his revenge, Jaquel had caused a car accident that killed an innocent man named Evander and set off a bomb that injured a crowd of bystanders. The bounty on Jaquel was indeed high, and Roan wanted it, but if he happened to run into him in the future, he would definitely arrest him. But since he couldn't find him in the short term, and since these two cases were stirred up by those damn CIA agents, Roan couldn't be bothered to clean up their mess.

The debriefing wasn't fully finished, but the workday had ended. The agents of the Fifth Investigation Unit went their separate ways. Mona took her notebook to her newly purchased small apartment, Ryder drove home to see his kids, and as for Roan... he followed Lacey to the location on the little card. He mostly wanted to broaden his horizons.

"Hmph."

Sitting in the passenger seat of the Chevrolet, Lacey curled her lip at Roan's words: "Once we get inside, we have to split up. How we play and how many people we meet tonight is up to our own skills. But there's one condition: we don't interfere with each other's prospects. OK?"

"No problem!"

Roan hit the gas, and the Chevrolet easily overtook the Buick in front. He tilted his head and asked with a smile: "But what if we both set our sights on the same person?"

Lacey pulled out cosmetics from a hidden spot and began applying them to her face. Hearing Roan's question, she winked and laughed: "Then we leave the choice to the person we both want. Let's see who they pick!" Lacey had been to many such places and was experienced, so she was very confident.

"It's a deal!"

Roan had a handsome face and a good build, so he was quite confident himself. Nodding in agreement, he turned the steering wheel, and the Chevrolet sped through the never-ending traffic, passing one car after another.

Feeling the car speed up, Lacey reached out and touched her seatbelt, confirming it was secure. She swallowed hard and said: "Roan, it's after hours, and we're not chasing Jaquel. There's no need to drive this fast."

Lacey had been puzzled for days. Roan drove so fast every time; how had he never been pulled over by an NYPD patrol officer for a speeding ticket?

"Lacey, there's a saying on the other side of the ocean: time is money!" Roan chuckled, indicating that he valued money and never wasted it.

"Bullshit."

Lacey finished her makeup, made the cosmetics magically disappear, gave Roan a glare, and shouted: "Time is money, but money can't buy time! Damn it, Roan, slow down! I don't want to end up like John King, throwing my life away for money!"

The example given by Lacey, a true-blue American, was a bit off, but Roan understood her meaning. To ensure he lived long enough to see more of the world, Roan finally decided to slow the car down.

"Hmph."

Lacey huffed and started typing on her phone. After a long while, she asked in a low voice: "By the way, Roan, do you think the CIA can find Jaquel?"

Roan tilted his head, puzzled: "Why do you ask?"

"William just messaged me saying the CIA wants to interrogate Demonte right now." Lacey showed Roan the message on her phone and shrugged: "He suspects the CIA might have obtained some new clues we don't know about."

"That's not impossible." Roan glanced at the phone, his brow furrowing: "Those CIA agents never tell the truth; who knows what clues they're hiding. Besides, they've been monitoring Jaquel for a long time. They might have inferred his next... target based on his past behavior."

As he spoke, Roan suddenly slammed on the brakes. His expression changed drastically, and he cursed: "Fu-k! I know where Jaquel is hiding!"
