Chapter Ninety-Three: The Strange Car

Hello, Detective Mu Linli 2318 words 2026-02-09 13:12:01

Mo Lan walked with the two old men back toward the city center. Night was slowly falling. When Leng Xue drove over and glanced at them, none of the three said a word, and he sped away immediately.

Mo Lan thought for a moment; if they kept walking, it would take forever to reach the city center. She took out her phone and called An Feng. She had assumed that after a few more steps they would come across a car, but not even a shadow appeared.

“Hello, An Feng, have you sent Uncle back home? Hurry over to this little road, something happened here. Come quickly and help me get the two old gentlemen back,” Mo Lan blurted out as soon as the call connected, afraid that even a single extra word would waste precious time.

On the other end, An Feng had just dropped someone off at home. Hearing this, he replied at once, “Alright, I’ll be there right away. Wait for me where you are.”

He hung up and rushed toward his car, jumped inside, and turned toward the city center, feeling anxious. For something to happen at this hour—was it the boss making a move?

Although he was driving fast, it still felt slow, as if time was slipping away, impossible to catch up.

It wasn’t just An Feng feeling this way. From the moment Leng Xue knew Qian Yin had drawn those people away alone, he had the same thought: why was the car so slow, and why hadn't they caught up to those people?

As An Feng spotted the three of them, he pulled up in front, intending to get out. But Mo Lan opened the car door and slipped into the passenger seat, while the two old men hurried into the back.

“Don’t say anything, just drive. Catch up to the person, hurry and find Qian Yin. That car’s been chasing her, no idea if they caught up yet. This little road leads straight to the end, near the Mo family estate,” Mo Lan said in a rush.

An Feng floored the accelerator, seeing Mo Lan’s anxious expression, and felt the same guilt; if only he hadn’t gone to that hotel for dinner.

The two old men appeared calm, but only they knew how worried they were for Qian Yin. Both girls were so kind and sensible, so easy to care for.

Meanwhile, Qian Yin had already driven near Mo Lan’s home. Unsure whether to head straight to the Mo estate or lure the pursuers elsewhere, she realized after turning that she was near the Mo family residence. Suddenly, those people disappeared. What was going on? Did they just come to take a look? Impossible.

Lost in thought, Qian Yin got out of the car and watched from the side. She waited for over ten minutes, but saw no one following her. Curiously, she walked forward along the road, but still saw no sign of them leaving. Where could they have gone?

Leng Xue drove up, finally spotting Qian Yin standing by the roadside. Relief washed over him. He quickly pulled over, got out, and hugged her tightly.

“How did you get here so fast?” Qian Yin asked, a smile tugging at her lips. Indeed, probably only this man would rush about so madly for her.

“Are you stupid? I was scared you’d get hurt. If someone kidnapped you, where would I ever find another you?” Leng Xue scolded, but his words were full of concern.

Qian Yin grinned foolishly, quietly nestled in his arms, with no intention of telling him what had really happened. All she needed was to know everyone was safe.

The four who caught up from behind saw the two embracing from afar. They didn’t want to intrude, but Mo Lan, still worried, decided to approach. She parked beside the two cars and got out, watching the pair as the two old men coughed a few times.

“Ahem, ahem.”

Hearing someone approach, Qian Yin pushed Leng Xue away, looked at the four who had followed, and said playfully, “I’m fine now, you should all go back and rest. We’re setting off tomorrow.”

“Where did those people go? Were they the boss’s men? Did you fight? Are you hurt?” Mo Lan stepped forward, grabbed Qian Yin’s hand, and checked her for injuries.

“I don’t know where they went. They didn’t follow me. As soon as I appeared near the Mo family estate and looked back, their car was gone. Did you see any cars when you came over?” Qian Yin asked in surprise. She hadn't seen any, nor any license plates.

Everyone was puzzled. How could there be no sign of them on such a straight road, with no side roads to turn into? Had they left earlier, or was it all a premeditated scheme?

“Everyone, let’s hurry back and rest. It’s late, and it’s not safe to linger outdoors,” said Elder Xian, who felt as if someone was watching him.

The group nodded and drove straight back to the Mo estate. Upon arrival, they found Boss Jin waiting at the door with two bodyguards.

“Boss Jin, why are you still up? Who are you waiting for?” Mo Lan was the first to ask.

“I heard from the bodyguards that Leng Xue snatched someone’s car to find you all. I knew something else had happened, so I waited here for you,” Boss Jin replied, looking at Leng Xue with great admiration. To seize a car right on the street—he’d never had such luck himself.

Everyone, previously unaware of the incident, turned to look at Leng Xue. Even Qian Yin was puzzled: so Leng Xue’s car was taken from someone on the street? What fool would give up their car and not call the police?

“That idiot said he didn’t want any money, just handed me the car,” Leng Xue answered awkwardly, then strode straight into the house.

The others gazed at him with awe. Someday, they’d have to try their luck on the street—maybe they’d meet a rich fool willing to give them a car too.

Everyone dispersed to rest. Mo Lan glanced at An Feng; the two stayed behind, planning a stroll in the garden. Hand in hand, they walked to the pond, quietly admiring the blooms of lotus.

Tonight, the moon was brilliantly bright, sometimes hiding shyly behind clouds, then peeking out to see if anyone was watching. At times it refused to come out, sulking like a child.

“What do you think of my family?” Mo Lan asked, for the first time openly following the script of a match-making scene. She’d attended such events before, but disliked the men—none handsome, none capable, and all full of themselves.

“I have no complaints at all. Your family is so wonderful, how could I dare have any?” An Feng replied, his face actually blushing. It was his first time discussing such matters with a girl.

Mo Lan giggled foolishly. This man was just too adorable. Judging by his reaction, he had probably never been on a blind date, not even knowing how these things went. Still, she liked his answer.

An Feng wrapped Mo Lan in his arms, quietly showing his affection under the moonlight. Sister Moon, displeased, hid herself behind the clouds, refusing to come out.
