Chapter 163: Returning to Westgate City (4)

Along the way, Qianyin was absorbed in the scenery. She had already decided that before leaving Ximen City, she would visit “Cold Blood’s” gravestone every day and talk to him. She could not bear to leave him all alone in that unfamiliar place.
Seeing Qianyin like this, Molan and An Feng did not dare say a word. They were afraid that if they said the wrong thing, Qianyin might suddenly burst into tears, and they would not know how to comfort her. Time would eventually bury all of this. Sorrowful memories would ultimately be buried deep in the heart; as long as nothing touched that place, it would not hurt.
They soon returned to their lodging, where Xiao Qi and Liu Fei had finally finished waiting for them. Seeing the redness around Qianyin’s eyes, they found it very strange and were just about to ask her about it when An Feng stopped them.
“Who made dinner? We’re hungry and want something to eat.” An Feng was being clever, hinting that the two of them should not meddle. Unfortunately, some people simply failed to understand.
“We don’t know how to cook,” Liu Fei replied foolishly.
He was practically asking to be scolded.
“What happened to Qianyin?” Ignoring An Feng’s words, Xiao Qi looked straight at Qianyin’s reddened eyes and asked.
“If you don’t know how to cook, then hurry up and learn. Do you want us to starve?” Molan quickly pulled Qianyin behind her, blocking her from their view. She did not want them asking questions and dragging Qianyin back into her sorrow.
“Let’s order takeout. None of us knows how to cook.” Seeing that Molan was angry too, Liu Fei tugged at Xiao Qi’s skirt and gently reminded her. He did not want to be sent back after being out for less than a day.
Only then did Xiao Qi restrain herself. She lowered her head without speaking and stood quietly beside Liu Fei, fiddling with her fingers. Silently, she warned herself that if she did not want to go back, she could not cause any more trouble.
“We don’t want takeout. Hurry and go buy some ingredients, then come back and cook,” An Feng said firmly. He had not eaten food made by Qianyin and Molan in a long time, and he sorely missed it. Today, he was determined to have them cook.
“Let’s go together.” Qianyin wiped the tears from her eyes and stepped forward. She looked at everyone present and also saw Boss Jin coming down the stairs. It had been a long time since she had cooked something for herself. Preparing food was a kind of happiness too. She hoped that she could be happy every day. If that person could see her there, he would probably be happy as well.
Molan nodded, and she and Qianyin took Liu Fei and Xiao Qi to the market. They picked out all kinds of delicious food: fresh vegetables, chicken, duck, fish, meat, and millet. After making a thorough round of the market, they bought many snacks and desserts, as well as drinks.

They truly spent the entire journey buying food, and no one mentioned Qianyin’s red eyes again. From time to time, Molan pointed out various foods and introduced them to Qianyin, telling her what she wanted to eat and what she did not.
Liu Fei and Xiao Qi felt especially aggrieved. They had no idea what had happened. The two young ladies completely ignored them; they had asked them to come along solely to carry the vegetables and other things.
The two of them did not dare interrupt, nor could they find an opening to speak. They could only follow pitifully behind, not even daring to take the dishes they liked. Several times, Xiao Qi wanted to lose her temper, but each time Liu Fei pulled her back and gave her a look that clearly said: If you want to go back, go by yourself. Do not drag me down with you.
For the sake of staying outside and having fun, Xiao Qi endured it.
At last, they had bought everything they needed and happily got into the car. The four of them glanced at the prosperous metropolis around them. Ximen City was an exceptionally high-end place, with buildings unlike those elsewhere—tall, magnificent, and imposing.
If they had been ordinary people, they probably would have wanted to stay in this city to work, enjoy its atmosphere, and make a place for themselves here. But they were not ordinary people. They could only be hurried passersby in this city, coming and going, stopping and starting, passing through one mountain resort and one city after another. Where would they finally settle?
Qianyin looked at the things in her hands, then at what Molan was carrying. Her gaze eventually settled on the cake in the back seat. She picked up a small piece and took two spoons. She handed one to Molan, kept the other for herself, and happily placed a bite in her mouth.
“You little glutton,” Molan said with a smile, reaching out to tap Qianyin’s ear. Then she picked up her spoon, took a little cake for herself, and put it into her mouth.
It was so sweet, yet not cloying at all. The flavor was fresh and delicious—a wonderful blend of orange, egg, and sugar.
Qianyin merely smiled without speaking. She ate the cake with a smile on her face. Once she occupied herself with something else, she found that she did not miss Cold Blood quite so much. Indeed, life had to be lived steadily and practically, or one would only indulge in needless thoughts. It seemed that from now on, she would have to fill her schedule completely and leave herself no idle time to dwell on things.
Xiao Qi glanced back from time to time, envious of the friendship between the two women. When would she ever find companions like that? But when she thought about her own temper, perhaps she would never have such friends in her entire life.
Xiao Qi lowered her head and smiled foolishly, then quietly looked ahead. Every now and then, she glanced at Liu Fei and suddenly realized that she had grown quite close to him recently. She could even understand the meaning behind his looks. Could that mean he had truly given up on An Feng?
Listening to the women’s sweet laughter, Liu Fei felt very happy. How long had it been since he had heard Molan laugh? It was wonderful to be able to come out with them; this way, he could learn more about Molan’s strengths and personality. How wonderful it would be if he could remain by her side forever.
But that was impossible, wasn’t it?
It was far too much to hope for.
The market was very close to their lodging, so they soon returned. An Feng spoke with Boss Jin about the matter and prepared to meet with the local police officers to learn more about the situation. They also discussed the Seven-Colored Light Jade. An Feng felt that it was a pity, but if they could not recover it, then so be it. Opening fire in public would affect the police department on their side.

When handling matters now, they had to consider the police department first, and only afterward the interests of everyone else. After all, they were police officers. Everything had to be approached with the greater situation in mind. Personal feelings had to be set aside whenever possible.
Boss Jin understood perfectly. He did not insist, and he also knew that they could not drag the police department into trouble. He simply did not want the people who had stolen his things to get off too easily.
“I know how to handle it. I won’t trouble you any further,” Boss Jin solemnly promised An Feng.
The two bodyguards stood to the side with their heads lowered, feeling miserable as well. It was all because they were too useless. There were many matters they could not handle on their own, so they had to leave them to these friends. They even had to consider whether helping them would harm their interests.
“Sigh, it’s not that we don’t want to help you, but we really have to put the police department first.” An Feng had no choice but to repeat himself, emphasizing how important this matter was. Boss Jin had always treated everyone well, and they ought to help him. But they could not openly use their identities as police officers to pursue those people.
First, there was no evidence proving that the thieves were the ones responsible.
Second, it had never been stated that Boss Jin was the only person who possessed Seven-Colored Light Jade. The matter had not been made public either.
These two conditions were insufficient to prove that Boss Jin’s claim was correct. They could not establish a case, nor could they harm anyone’s interests. Boss Jin could only swallow his anger and accept the loss in silence.
Boss Jin nodded, utterly helpless. For people like them, discovering a fine piece of jade brought joy for a time, but losing it meant a lifetime of losses.
