Chapter 160: Going to West Gate City Again (1)
Mr. Mo cursed throughout the night, doing little more than abusing Mo Lan, Qian Yin, and the ungrateful wretch he had raised. Only after his mouth had gone dry did he finally fall into a dazed sleep. Early the next morning, he began cursing again, yet somehow his throat did not hurt in the slightest.
Mo Lan had stayed with Elder Mo all night and had not returned to her room. By morning, her eyes were already red. When she heard Mr. Mo’s cursing, she felt nothing at all. She merely instructed the kitchen auntie to take him some breakfast.
It was not until everyone else had gathered around the dining table that they realized how serious the matter truly was and how deeply it had affected Mo Lan. The dark circles beneath her eyes, the redness in them, and her swollen lower eyelids made it obvious that she had cried all night and had barely rested.
An Feng considerately set a glass of warm milk before her, but Mo Lan did not raise her head or look at anyone. Instead, she kept her head bowed and carefully ate the vermicelli in her bowl. Seeing her like this, everyone sighed inwardly and said nothing more, focusing quietly on their breakfast.
After they finished eating, Mo Lan glanced at everyone and spoke directly.
“Boss Jin, let’s prepare to leave for Ximen City. Elder Xian, Dong, South, West, and North, I’ll leave the family in your hands. You must take good care of Grandfather for me.”
Mo Lan wanted to get out and clear her head. She did not want to let the unhappiness weighing on her spill over onto anyone else. Perhaps a little travel and relaxation would help her forget the troubles at home. If she stayed in this house much longer, she feared she would go mad.
“Wait here for me. I’ll return to the station, make the necessary arrangements, and then come with you.” After saying this, An Feng picked up his things and headed outside. His steps were hurried, making it clear that he sincerely cared for Mo Lan and was willing to do anything for her.
“Don’t worry. Leave it to me. I’ll take care of everything.” Elder Xian made the solemn promise, then glanced at the four men—Dong, South, West, and North.
The four nodded obediently, blinking as they stared at Qian Yin.
Qian Yin merely smiled. She knew exactly what the four of them were thinking. They were unhappy because they could not accompany them. But there was nothing to be done. Someone had to guard the Mo family, and there was no one else to take their place.
When An Feng returned to the station, he glanced at the people who had arrived early and were waiting there. Recently, Little Seven and Liu Fei had also been training the officers alongside him, striving for better results. Their training continued every day without interruption, with occasional surprise inspections.
An Feng looked at the orderly ranks without saying anything and headed straight for the police chief’s office. The scenery along the way passed too quickly for him to take it in. Before he could notice anything unusual, he had already knocked on the office door.
“Come in.” The police chief was extremely busy, his head lowered over a pile of documents. Hearing the knock, he called out without looking up.
A great many cases handled over the past year were piled on the desk. They had to be reviewed and compiled repeatedly into a complete set of files before being submitted to the higher police bureau. It was time to select people to be sent there. The police chief was reluctant as well; after all, the talented officers they had trained were about to leave.
“Mo Lan and I are going to Ximen City,” An Feng said as he entered and glanced at the desk. He did not bother with anything else and immediately stated the reason for his visit, clearly intending to return to the Mo residence and leave with them at once.
Only then did the police chief look up at him properly. With a helpless expression, he said, “Although there haven’t been many pressing matters lately, it isn’t good for you to keep asking for leave like this. You’re about to be transferred to the higher police bureau. This will leave a bad impression on the senior chiefs there.”
“Whether I go or not doesn’t matter. We really have an urgent matter to deal with.” An Feng turned and left without another word. When he passed Little Seven and Liu Fei, he paused briefly and glanced at the officers before continuing on.
The police chief sighed repeatedly, utterly at a loss. It was not that he wanted Mo Lan and An Feng to leave, but the higher police bureau had to transfer several people there. The others did not meet the requirements, so there was no choice but to send those two. Little Seven and Liu Fei had also been disqualified.
The moment Little Seven and Liu Fei saw An Feng, they saluted and asked in unison, “Good morning, Captain. Captain, where are you going?”
An Feng stopped again and looked at them. Calmly, he replied, “I’m going to Ximen City. Why?”
“Can we come with you?” Little Seven asked with a smile.
There were still many places she had never visited, and she badly wanted to go along for the experience. Besides, there were no particularly important cases at the moment. They could handle the other minor matters themselves.
An Feng surveyed the expressions of the officers before finally turning his gaze to the two of them. He said seriously, “We’re carrying out a secret mission. If you want to come, go ask the police chief first. Then come to the Mo residence and find me. Whether you’re allowed to go or not, call me and let me know.”
Little Seven and Liu Fei nodded earnestly. They watched An Feng leave, then turned back to the group of officers below them and said excitedly, “For the next few days, you’re free to act on your own. Handle the affairs at the station and accept assignments yourselves.”
The two of them immediately ran to the police chief’s office. When the chief saw their excited faces, his brows drew together. They were already unable to go to the higher police bureau. That alone was a disappointment. Instead of making an effort to remain here as elite team captains, they spent every day thinking about following others around on pointless adventures.
Unfortunately, he could not refuse them either. Letting them accompany An Feng and broaden their horizons was not such a bad idea. The moment he nodded, the two of them dashed away without even giving him time to finish his instructions.
Mo Lan returned to her room and took a shower. She came out wearing an entirely black trouser suit, glanced at those seated in the room without saying anything, then sat beside Qian Yin and began playing with her phone.
Dong, South, West, and North were still gathered around Qian Yin, earnestly reminding her that she had to take good care of her health and could not afford any more mishaps. Otherwise, they would never let her leave the house again. Helplessly, Qian Yin nodded and agreed to each of their little demands.
Ever since the incident, Dong, South, West, and North had stopped treating her as their master or elder sister. Instead, they treated her like a child. Qian Yin could only smile bitterly. This was the consequence of her own actions.
Elder Xian, for his part, gave both Mo Lan and Qian Yin his instructions. After all, with Elder Mo gone, he also had to take Mo Lan’s feelings into consideration.
Mo Lan smiled and nodded without saying anything. The Mo residence was still fairly lively at that moment, though every so often a harsh, furious curse rang out, causing everyone present to frown again.
By the time An Feng arrived, he already had two little followers trailing behind him. Mo Lan and the others looked at them in confusion. Were these two coming along as well? Was there really nothing left to do at the station?
“Good morning, Captain.” The two stepped forward and saluted first. Then they turned to Elder Xian and nodded at him without saying another word. They certainly looked obedient enough. Hopefully, they would not cause any trouble along the way.
Everyone took one last look at Elder Mo. Those who were heading to Ximen City found their places in the various cars and prepared to set out. The people remaining at the Mo residence could only stand at the gate and watch them leave from a distance, helplessly. They wanted to follow Qian Yin and protect her too—only they knew how badly they wished to.
Since she did not want to disturb Mo Lan and An Feng’s romance, Qian Yin very considerately took a seat in Boss Jin’s car.
