Chapter One Hundred and Thirteen: Mo Lan and An Feng Quarrel
Mo Lan glared angrily at An Feng. How could this man be so unreasonable? Now that they knew where the boss and his people were, why not go rescue her at once? Why was he still standing there, worrying whether it might be a trap? Every extra day Qian Yin spent there meant another day of suffering. Did he not understand that?
Their thoughts were fundamentally different. An Feng was thinking of the bigger picture, while Mo Lan had only Qian Yin in her heart. These past few days, they still had not found Qian Yin, and Mo Lan was nearly driven mad with anxiety. Outwardly she remained calm, but only she knew how turbulent her heart truly was.
When all the officers came back, they saw the two of them standing there like drawn swords, both wearing scowling expressions. One by one, they looked on in confusion. What on earth was going on?
When Xiao Qi and Liu Fei returned, they happened to see the two of them with darkened faces. After a moment’s thought, they still went to stand beside Mo Lan and asked, "What happened?"
"Nothing. Tell the chief that I’ll handle this myself. The rest of you stay here. I don’t need your help, and I don’t want to drag you into this. I’ll go save her myself."
With that, Mo Lan gathered her things and strode out. The officers all stepped aside to make way for her.
Before Liu Fei and Xiao Qi could even speak, Mo Lan was already gone. They turned back to look at An Feng and only then realized that he had turned away as well, not even looking back when Mo Lan left. Though they could not see his expression, the fist he had clenched made it clear enough: An Feng was angry, and very angry indeed.
The two of them were about to slip away to report to the chief when An Feng stopped them.
"I’m afraid this is a trap, so you don’t need to take part in the rescue. Mo Lan and I will go. There’s no need to inform the chief either. Just continue with your own work and pretend nothing has happened."
Liu Fei and Xiao Qi were about to say something, but after he finished speaking, An Feng hurried out as well, just like Mo Lan.
These days, Mo Lan had been picked up and dropped off by An Feng, and her own car had long since been stored in the garage. She bitterly regretted not having driven it here herself. Now that this had happened, she would have to take a taxi home.
Just then, a car happened to be approaching, and An Feng came after her. Mo Lan said nothing. She got into the car, gave the address, and closed her eyes to think about how to save Qian Yin.
Seeing her leave, An Feng was truly furious. Why did this woman lose all reason whenever anything involved Qian Yin? It was always like this. Could she not think about the bigger picture? Was her own life worth so little?
He got into his car at once and drove straight toward the Mo residence, keeping close behind the taxi. He had to go to the Mo family home and stop them from rushing to Wolf-Bear Mountain to save Qian Yin, so they would not disrupt the entire plan.
The main goal was not only to rescue Qian Yin, but also to capture the boss’s people. Cold Blood had already died at the boss’s hands. Were they all going to deliver themselves to him one after another?
The more An Feng thought about it, the angrier he became. He was beginning to dislike Mo Lan’s temperament. Official business was official business; private matters were private matters. She might be Qian Yin’s friend, but she was also a police officer, and she had a duty to every citizen in the city.
She kept doing such irresponsible things. Did she never feel ashamed of holding the title of deputy team leader?
The driver was somewhat bewildered; the car behind them had been tailing them the whole way. He did not know the man in that car at all. Was he perhaps here for this young lady?
An Feng simply followed behind them, never overtaking, and never intending to stop the car and force her into his own.
The police station was not far from the Mo residence, and after more than ten minutes they finally arrived. No sooner had Mo Lan paid and stepped out than An Feng pulled up at the front gate of the Mo home, got out at once, and hurried over to seize her hand.
Seeing this, the driver immediately turned the car around and fled, clearly afraid of getting involved. Besides, the Mo family had not exactly been at peace lately; he should not have come to such a place in the first place.
Angry, Mo Lan shook off An Feng’s hand and said nothing as she went inside. An Feng stepped forward, intending to stop her and prevent her from informing the others, lest the elders start overthinking matters.
Mo Lan shoved past him in anger and turned to run straight into the house. As soon as she entered the hall, she saw that everyone was there. They seemed to be discussing something, each face creased with deep worry.
An Feng came in after her and saw the same scene. Everyone’s gaze fell on the two of them, and Mo Lan and An Feng both looked somewhat awkward. They found a place and sat down.
"What are you two coming back in such a hurry for? Is there nothing going on at the station?" Old Master Mo’s expression darkened when he saw them. So much had happened recently that he did not want these two getting involved in the family’s affairs any further.
"We’re fine. We have news. Qian Yin is on Wolf-Bear Mountain, near where Elder Xian used to live," Mo Lan said quickly, not giving An Feng any chance to object. No matter what, she had to say it. East, South, West, and North all had a responsibility to go and rescue Qian Yin.
An Feng had intended to stop her, but since she had already said it, there was nothing he could do. He could only remind them not to act rashly.
When East, South, West, and North heard the news, their eyes lit up at once. At last, they had heard something good. They had waited so many days that they were nearly frantic, and yet they could not abandon those two old men and go searching on their own.
An Feng glanced at the delighted expressions on the four youngsters’ faces, then at the two elders, and said helplessly, "I’m afraid this is a trap. I don’t want you all going to rescue her. This information was secretly passed along by someone from the boss’s side. Don’t you think that makes it even more likely to be a trap?"
East, South, West, and North had been thrilled by the news, but after a bucket of cold water was poured over them, they became gloomy at once. After all, Cold Blood had already died. If they all went rushing in as well, would that not spell disaster? Though none of the four boys had any lofty ambition to save the world, Qian Yin could not be allowed to come to harm.
The two old men also wore complicated expressions. Qian Yin absolutely had to be saved. But if there was a real chance it was a trap, then they could only proceed with caution. They could not act recklessly.
Old Master Mo said nothing. He stood on An Feng’s side, after all. He, too, did not want anyone present to depart as Cold Blood had.
"Don’t come here talking as if the sky is falling. If you don’t want to save Qian Yin, just say so," Mo Lan snapped furiously. An Feng had actually exposed the matter before everyone. Clearly, everyone present was capable of going to save Qian Yin, and now they would all think first of the bigger picture and give up the chance to rescue her.
Everyone looked at Mo Lan, who was almost like a rooster bristling in a rage, and no one knew what to say or how to persuade her. They all knew she and Qian Yin were very close, but the situation did not seem to allow anyone to sacrifice a life for such private feelings.
An Feng also rose in anger, stepped forward, seized Mo Lan’s hand, and shook her fiercely. "Please, come to your senses. Do you want everyone here to lose their lives trying to save Qian Yin? Right now, you tell me: do you choose all these people, or do you choose Qian Yin? Answer me."
Mo Lan finally seemed to wake a little at those words. Perhaps these recent events had clouded her judgment like a potent drug, leaving her with only the thought of saving Qian Yin and making her ignore the lives of the people she cared about in that room.
