Chapter One Hundred and Six: Someone Challenges An Feng
Someone had been carelessly spreading rumors about how formidable An Feng was, and in the end someone else, unable to swallow his admiration, came knocking at the door to pick a fight.
An Feng was sitting at his desk going through some documents when, all at once, a hand smashed straight through the tabletop in front of him and sent the papers scattering across the floor. He lifted his head and glanced at the troublemaker, a man whose intentions were clearly hostile. He did not know who the man was, nor had he ever heard where he came from.
The other officers stood with files in their arms, quietly watching the scene unfold. Mo Lan looked up at the fellow as well. To barge into the station so brazenly and stir up trouble took a truly enormous pair, or rather, lately it seemed everyone had been growing bolder and bolder.
"If you need to pay for this desk, go see the chief and settle the bill. If you have personal business with me, come to my home. This is also my workplace. If you disturb me, I’m afraid I may send you straight to hell."
An Feng merely glanced at the man, then bent down to gather the documents. He showed neither surprise nor unease at the sudden appearance of this stranger.
"I’ll pay for it. But fight me first," the man snapped, tense and impatient. "Waiting until you get off work is too long. I want to compare myself with you right now."
He spoke with obvious irritation and urgency. To ordinary officers, the man was not only rude, but also utterly brainless.
Liu Fei and Xiao Qi were not at the station today; they had gone off to handle something else. The rest of the officers simply watched the spectacle, none of them stepping forward to deal with it. The chief had been preparing to take a nap over there, but after being summoned over, he was thoroughly annoyed.
Seeing this, the chief grew even angrier. Who was this person, coming in here and smashing An Feng’s seat? Was he not slapping the face of the entire station? And who had let such a man in?
"If you want to settle things privately, fine. But little brother, you come into my station and smash things, and now you think you can just walk away? Not a chance."
The chief stepped between them, glaring at the man with rising fury.
"I’m not incapable of paying."
The man answered at once, his eyes stubborn and unyielding.
Mo Lan truly did not want to fight a man like this. Was there a hole in his head? So what if he had money? Was he some kind of big shot because of it? He was throwing a tantrum all the way into the station. Did he especially like the food here or something?
Still, since the chief and An Feng both intended to deal with it, she might as well watch and see how the people in high places handled such matters.
The chief strode forward and slapped the man across the face, then said with complete calm, "I’m very rich too. Does that mean I can give you a few slaps as well? I’m not incapable of paying."
This shocked the other officers senseless. But when they thought about it, it made sense. An Feng was the chief’s darling treasure, how could anyone be allowed to provoke him like this? An Feng had finally been transferred to their station and had done so much for them. Even if there were no great merit, there had certainly been hard work.
For the first time, Mo Lan and the other female officers felt that the chief looked incredibly handsome.
The man was stunned stiff by the blow. Someone had actually dared to hit him inside the station, and it was the chief himself. Good heavens, what kind of place was this? Even the highest-ranking enforcer, the very figure outsiders saw as a messenger of justice, was leading the charge in beating people.
An Feng felt that although the chief’s way of venting anger was satisfying, it would bring serious harm to the station’s reputation, making outsiders think they were neglecting their duties and favoring their own people.
"Want a fight, do you? Then come outside and fight me. If you’re hurt or killed, I’ll pay your medical bills and I’ll arrange your burial."
An Feng’s words were imposing beyond measure. After gathering up all the documents, he strode outside. Just beyond the station was a small yard. It was not very large, but it was more than enough for a fight, and it would not damage anything inside the station.
The man, clutching his face in anger, walked out stiffly, as if he meant to beat An Feng into a cripple and vent the fury in his heart. So many people had seen him get slapped because of An Feng. How could he possibly swallow that humiliation?
The chief was the third to step outside, and the others swarmed after him to watch the show. Since they wanted to cheer An Feng on, the chief allowed them to come out and observe.
Mo Lan naturally came out too. How could she not stand by her boyfriend when he went out to duel someone?
"An Feng, go for it! You’re the best!"
Mo Lan did not care at all what anyone thought. She clapped her hands beside the yard and cheered him on.
The others kept looking from one to the other, and every so often at Mo Lan as well. So their Captain An Feng had already been taken down by Mo Lan. It seemed none of them had a chance.
The two men saluted each other, and then the fight began.
The man was accustomed to taking the offensive, and both his fists and feet were heavy with force, as though he truly meant to cripple An Feng.
From the very beginning, An Feng had held back. He did not think this man was worth using his full strength on. Sure enough, the man disappointed him. With only that little strength, he was already completely outmatched. Who had given him the courage to come here and make trouble?
An Feng parried every lethal blow with ease. To those who could not see clearly, it only seemed as though he was at a disadvantage. In truth, he had always held the upper hand. If he chose to counterattack, the man could be on the ground in less than ten minutes.
The man truly could not hold out. Things had been going passably well at first, but once he panicked, he fell even further into disadvantage. Several times his eyes nearly took a blow from An Feng’s fist. The eyes were one of the most vulnerable parts of the human body; in a street fight, people often went for the eyes because it ended things quickly.
The man took a step back, then suddenly whipped out a flying kick. An Feng shifted to the side, and the kick missed completely, sending the man crashing to the ground. He had put too much force into it, leaving himself no room to recover, thinking he would land against a flesh cushion, only to slam hard into the ground instead. That had to hurt like hell.
This man’s fighting ability was simply too poor; he had nothing but brute strength. He did not understand technique, and he was impatient. Who on earth had given him the nerve to come looking for trouble? An Feng usually did not even go out much. It was truly impossible to understand.
Mo Lan saw everything perfectly clearly and found it terribly boring. Were people these days so idle after eating their fill? With so little strength, they still thought they could come here and challenge others. Did they really think everyone in the station ate for free?
The other officers cheered. Two of them helped the man to his feet and took him to the hospital, after all An Feng had said that if he was injured or killed, he would pay. The man had not actually suffered much, but he kept his eyes tightly shut, his face flushed red, probably from both anger and shame.
The chief glanced at An Feng, then at Mo Lan, and said, "You two, come with me."
Hearing the chief’s tone, it was clear he was angry. Mo Lan and An Feng understood why. The other officers, however, were still baffled. Had they not won? Why was he so unhappy?
When they reached the chief’s office, Mo Lan and An Feng sat down at once, ready to hear what he had to say.
"You two shouldn’t be so high-profile. Look at this—now even people from outside are coming here to make trouble. I’m not blaming you for being too flashy. It’s just that sometimes, you should keep a lower profile."
The chief did not quite know how to phrase it, and his words sounded a little contradictory. In the end, he simply meant well for them.
The two of them nodded. They had not been showing off, nor had they asked anyone to spread the matter around. It was likely that someone with ulterior motives had taken advantage of it. They would have to be more careful from now on.
