Chapter 6: Trying to Show Off Backfires Spectacularly!
Wu Qingya nodded slightly and extended her delicate hand, her expression tinged with a subtle grievance. Even something as simple as holding hands required her to remind him—no wonder Jiang Jin was often met with suspicion.
Only then did Jiang Jin realize and hastily clasp her slender hand.
The two entered the hotel and took the elevator to the fourth floor. Upon exiting, they found themselves in a circular corridor lined with a plush red carpet, flanked on either side by a dozen VIP private rooms.
Jiang Jin held Wu Qingya’s hand as they walked down the corridor, searching for room 403.
At that moment, a middle-aged man emerged from the restroom and approached them.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit with a golden tie, exuding an air of authority and success.
Upon seeing Wu Qingya, the man froze for a moment.
When he noticed her holding hands with Jiang Jin, his expression immediately shifted.
Wu Qingya’s face darkened, and she gently shook her head.
The man forcefully swallowed the words he was about to say.
Jiang Jin frowned, looking between Wu Qingya and the man, filled with suspicion. “Qingya, do you know him?”
Wu Qingya wore an innocent expression as she replied, “No, I don’t. Sir, do you know me?”
The man’s face flickered briefly but quickly regained composure. “No… I don’t.”
Wu Qingya smiled and said, “See? We really don’t know each other.” She then lightly tapped Jiang Jin’s hand, signaling him not to overthink it.
Jiang Jin muttered inwardly: “If you two don’t know each other, then I’ll write my own name backwards!”
No, he had to find out the truth about Wu Qingya.
As they passed each other, the middle-aged man turned his head and watched them disappear around the corner.
After a moment of contemplation, he took out his phone and made a call.
“Hello, boss, I just saw the young lady.”
Inside room 403.
Li Ming gossipingly announced, “Everyone, big news! Jiang Jin’s driving a BMW 840i now!”
Sun Kai chimed in, “And it’s orange—pretty flashy!”
Back in the private room, Li Ming and Sun Kai embellished the tale of Jiang Jin renting the luxury car and hiring a girlfriend.
As the other classmates exchanged curious glances, Jiang Jin pushed open the door, holding Wu Qingya’s hand as they entered.
“Classmates, I’ve missed you all so much!”
He spread his arms wide at once, his exaggerated expression reminiscent of a grand old performer on stage.
There was undoubtedly some acting involved, but the original Jiang Jin had a good relationship with his classmates.
Influenced by those memories, Jiang Jin eagerly anticipated reuniting with friends he hadn’t seen in two years.
What greeted him was an awkward silence.
Jiang Jin scratched his head sheepishly, “Is it because I’m more handsome now that you can’t recognize me?”
“Indeed, you’re much more handsome than in college.”
“Your clothes look pretty high quality—what brand is that?”
“Whoa, that watch on your wrist looks interesting. A luxury brand?”
Gradually, the classmates snapped out of their daze and began greeting him, discreetly sneaking glances at Wu Qingya.
Not to mention, the girlfriend Jiang Jin rented was genuinely beautiful. They decided they had to ask him where he got her from—and whether extra services came at an additional cost.
“Jiang Jin, your outfit looks great!”
Zhao Wen, having not noticed Jiang Jin’s attire earlier in the dim light, now squinted in surprise.
“I just bought it randomly, nothing special,” Jiang Jin said, waving off the compliment as he led Wu Qingya to the large round table and sat down.
Zhao Wen chuckled, “He’s not just randomly buying things—Armani suit, Patek Philippe watch; he came prepared.”
Hearing Zhao Wen, others gasped, “What? Armani? That’s a luxury brand!”
Another added, “Patek Philippe? That’s top-tier. That watch must’ve cost a fortune!”
Zhao Wen nodded, “The model is 5146G-010, retailing for over 360,000.”
Upon hearing the price, their expressions turned odd.
Jiang Jin came from an ordinary family and held a regular job—how could he be wearing a watch worth 360,000 Dragon Kingdom currency?
It had to be fake.
Luxury goods are meant to be a reflection of the person wearing them!
Amid the awkward silence, Jiang Jin placed a black plastic bag on the table.
“I brought some gifts for everyone.”
Curious, the others leaned in.
Yang Xue laughed softly, “Ha, don’t tell me you made handmade cards?”
Sun Kai seriously guessed, “I bet it’s local specialties—maybe green onions from Jiang Jin’s hometown.”
Li Ming smirked playfully, “So what if it’s local specialties? It’s Jiang Jin’s thought that counts! But I don’t like green onions, so skip me.”
The room erupted in laughter.
Jiang Jin smiled mysteriously and teased, “Don’t worry, I didn’t consider you when buying gifts.”
Li Ming feigned disdain, “It’s just a few green onions—who cares… Whoa, Huawei P40 Pro+!”
When Jiang Jin opened the bag, Li Ming finally saw what was inside: over a dozen boxes of Huawei P40 Pro+ smartphones, all 512GB versions!
Li Ming was stunned. The top-tier P40 Pro+ cost 8,888 with no discount—so he just declined a gift worth 8,888?
Rounded up, that was practically a hundred million! He bitterly regretted it.
“We haven’t seen each other in two years, and I wasn’t sure what to bring, but in the end, I thought phones would be best.”
“Everyone needs a phone, and even if you’re not thinking of upgrading, you can give it to family or friends,” Jiang Jin said as he handed out the phones one by one.
“Feng Kai, this one’s yours.”
“Bai Long, here’s yours...”
“Hei, don’t be so polite. You helped me cover for skipping class plenty of times.”
“Zhang Bo, you’ve put on weight—got a beer belly now.”
Zhao Wen’s face darkened as he watched Jiang Jin distribute the phones, veins bulging on his forehead.
He had organized this reunion but hadn’t brought gifts himself. Jiang Jin was clearly embarrassing him.
“Sun Kai, give me your phone after you get it—I’ve wanted a P40 Pro+ for a long time,” Wang Linlin said eagerly.
Sun Kai watched Jiang Jin with envy but feigned indifference.
“Pfft, it’s just a Huawei P40 Pro+. I was thinking of buying you an iPhone 12 Pro.”
Jiang Jin replied, “Better get Wang Linlin the iPhone 12 Pro. I didn’t consider you when buying gifts.”
Sun Kai’s face flushed dark red.
His monthly salary was less than 5,000—there was no way he could afford an iPhone 12 Pro!
Wang Linlin was momentarily stunned, then stomped away out of the room.
The others nearly burst out laughing—the fool Sun Kai got his comeuppance for trying to show off.
Soon, Jiang Jin finished handing out all thirteen phones.
Everyone except Zhao Wen, Yang Xue, Sun Kai, Li Ming, and Wang Linlin received one.
A blatant slight.
Although Wang Linlin was pursued back by Sun Kai, her expression remained sour, casting resentful glances at him.
Yang Xue looked at Jiang Jin with disdain. “I just calculated—thirteen top-tier P40 Pro+ phones cost 115,544.”
Her voice dripped with scorn as she continued, “Add the car rental and girlfriend rental, and you’ve spent over 120,000 today, right?”
Jiang Jin’s expression shifted slightly. “What are you trying to say?”
Yang Xue’s lips curled into a sneer. “You’re trying to make me regret it, aren’t you? Don’t deny it—that’s obvious to everyone. But have you considered that no matter how much you spend, it won’t change the fact that your family is ordinary and your job is average? You’re just a poor loser.”
She paused, then added, “Look at Zhao Wen—his family’s worth fifty or sixty million. Even if he didn’t bring gifts, everyone knows he’s rich.”
As Yang Xue finished, Sun Kai, Li Ming, and others nodded in agreement.
Zhao Wen, feeling proud, deliberately said, “Fifty or sixty million is nothing compared to real wealthy people.”
“For example, Jiang Jin’s new boss, who spent 800 million to buy this company and renamed it Supernova Special Materials Co., Ltd.—that’s a real big shot!”
Jiang Jin’s eyes flickered. Whoa, the system’s moves were bold—spending 800 million!
Come to think of it, if Zhao Wen knew the ‘new boss’ he was praising was Jiang Jin himself, he’d probably go mad.
