Chapter 36: Internship Begins

After reading the description of the demons, Ye Yang drew a deep breath. From zombies to demons, he had been stunned again and again, but this time was the most outrageous of all. As far as he could tell, demons were simply invincible. A minimum of three thousand demonic power? What was that supposed to mean? He had barely a little over two hundred!
How was he supposed to fight something like that?
A demon’s power was so overwhelming that it was practically impossible to match. Hunters, on the other hand, could not compete with demons in raw strength at all. They could only rely on supernatural abilities, certain weapons, and combat techniques.
But… demons might have supernatural abilities, yet Ye Yang had none!
Did that mean he would never be able to defeat a demon in his entire life?
The most frightening part was that these creatures looked exactly like human beings. Only hunters with powerful perception could identify them. And if he remembered correctly, his own perception was only… eleven points?
Ye Yang nearly wept tears of blood. He had never felt so useless.
High intelligence, no weaknesses, immunity to mercury toxins, the ability to regenerate at incredible speed, immense physical strength after transformation, and demonic power that no one could rival. The only way to kill them was to chop them to pieces.
Ye Yang felt sick just reading it. He never wanted to encounter one of these monsters in his life. He absolutely could not defeat them—not even if he died trying!
Farther down, when Ye Yang reached the description of Level Five, he was too drained to complain anymore. Level Five had only two sentences.
First, a Level Five demon was an enhanced version of a Level Four demon. It was essentially the same, only much stronger.
Second, one should never even dream of confronting a Level Five demon alone. Even a Level Five hunter could never defeat one.
Ye Yang stared speechlessly at the sky. Then what was the point of saying any of this? No one could beat them! Humanity might as well go extinct. Why bother struggling at all?
The next section compared the actual combat strength of humans and various monsters. It mainly explained what kinds of monsters hunters of each level could defeat, while sternly warning them never to overestimate themselves and challenge monsters above their rank. That was nothing short of suicide.
Level One zombies were worthless. Any hunter could easily take one down, and ordinary humans with weapons could defeat them as well—provided they were careful not to become infected by bacteria.
Level Two mutants were roughly as strong as a Level One hunter like Lin Tian. With sufficient weapons, a Level One hunter could kill them. If there were enough humans, they could kill them too, though they still had to be careful not to get infected.
Level Three predators were considerably more terrifying. Unless humans had aircraft and artillery, encountering one meant certain death. Even novice hunters would have great difficulty dealing with them. A Level Two hunter would struggle to kill one unless they possessed absurd luck—the kind of luck that let them find money every time they stepped outside. Otherwise, they were better off training honestly until they reached Level Three.
Predators were also extremely infectious. Those bitten would usually mutate within a dozen minutes. Hunters were naturally exempt—though if someone was completely eaten within those ten minutes, then…
As for Level Four demons, unless one was an exceptionally powerful hunter like Wang Feng, one absolutely should not provoke them. Even Level Four hunters should not dream of fighting them alone. The records mentioned that a hunter team had once been wiped out by a single Level Four demon. That team consisted of one Level Four instructor and three Level Three students…
Still, Level Four demons could not infect human beings. This surprised Ye Yang, because their true nature was not bacterial but fungal.
As for Level Five…
Ye Yang ground his teeth. Those super-monsters were beings that even Wang Feng probably could not handle. He doubted anyone could defeat one alone.
Yet one sentence in the records caught his attention.
Unless you are Su Moxuan, never dream of challenging a Level Five demon alone. If you want to die, dig a hole and bury yourself in it.
“Su Moxuan?” Ye Yang froze. Was that a person’s name? It certainly sounded like one. Who was this guy? How powerful was he? Stronger than Wang Feng? Someone capable of fighting a Level Five demon?
Unfortunately, the records contained no introduction to Su Moxuan.
The two articles had thoroughly awakened Ye Yang’s interest. Licking his lips, he decided to keep reading. He might as well look at the descriptions of how supernatural abilities were used. Knowing was always better than not knowing, even though the odds of him possessing such an ability were pitifully low. Wang Feng had said that signs of a supernatural ability would usually appear before one’s demonic power reached one hundred.
Just as Ye Yang was about to continue, the door opened.
He sighed at once. There was no need to look. Someone had come to drag him into another game of Plants vs. Zombies.

“Come on… play with me… come play a game with me…”
Qi Fang’s pestering had driven Ye Yang nearly insane. He seriously considered knocking the girl down and scaring her so badly that she would never dare come looking for him again. If this continued, he would never escape her clutches for the rest of his life.
Still, Ye Yang truly wanted to keep reading. He had no choice but to hold the controller in one hand while sneaking glances at the documents. He read two more sections, one about the causes of bacterial infection and another about the principles behind the evolution of hunters, though he could barely understand either of them.
“Don’t get distracted! You keep dying! Pay attention and play properly!” Qi Fang snarled through gritted teeth.
Ye Yang helplessly closed the folder and grumbled, “Don’t you get tired of playing day and night?”
“I sleep during the day and come here to play with you at night,” Qi Fang replied carelessly.
Ye Yang nearly burst into tears. He could not sleep during the day! Was this girl planning to torment him to death?
“Oh, right. I’m thinking of moving in after a while. Once I get tired of Aunt Zhou Yue’s cooking, I’ll move here and keep you company.”
Qi Fang dropped another earth-shattering announcement.
With a resounding thud, Ye Yang collapsed backward, foam spilling from his mouth. He felt that perhaps it would be better if he simply died like this.
Seven days passed in the blink of an eye.
Ye Yang rose early that morning, boiled himself a simple bowl of noodles, and went to find Sang Shi and Chen Yun. With a battle imminent, even he could not afford to sleep in.
Because they were going into battle, Chen Yun wore a light-brown combat outfit. Compared with the skirt she had worn before, it suited her less, but the moment Ye Yang saw her, he shamefully became aroused. That top of hers simply could not contain the pair of lively little rabbits struggling to burst free.
“What’s wrong?” Chen Yun asked, her face faintly flushed.
Although Ye Yang’s expression had not changed, his frantic attempts to wipe away his nosebleed were both amusing and embarrassing to the girl.
“N-nothing. Let’s go find Sang Shi.”
Ye Yang charged down the stairs without even daring to turn his head. That girl’s lethal power was practically on the level of a nuclear bomb.
When they reached the training field, Sang Shi was already waiting. Wang Feng was there too, and Lin Tian had unexpectedly returned as well.
“Little Yang, come here for a moment.”
Lin Tian seized Ye Yang by the arm and pulled him aside. Then he secretly slipped a small box into his hands.
“I won’t be going with you. It’s a revolver. Keep it safe, and don’t use it unless you have no other choice.”
“Huh? But I have a submachine gun.” Ye Yang was puzzled. A handgun’s firepower was too weak, wasn’t it?
“Idiot. The bullets are made of mercury. Don’t use them recklessly. There are only six rounds, and mercury ammunition is rarely authorized anymore. It’s too wasteful.”
Lin Tian glared at him, then secretly glanced toward Wang Feng. It seemed he had given Ye Yang the weapon behind Wang Feng’s back.
“Oh, and both the gun and the bullets were specially modified. The bullets explode immediately upon impact. A mutant will die from one shot. Even a predator won’t survive if you hit it accurately. There are fewer than ten of these guns at headquarters, and the bullets are even rarer.”
Ye Yang was deeply moved—not because the gun and ammunition were rare, but because they were proof of Lin Tian’s concern for him. It seemed all those years of calling him Uncle Lin had not been for nothing.
Wang Feng also gave Ye Yang several things. His spear had been completed, but he would not need it for the moment, so he stored it in the storage space on his phone. There were also various necessities: emergency rations, drinks, and three vials of serum for each person. Hunters were immune to infection, but the serum could be used to save anyone they encountered who required assistance.
There were also several powerful modern weapons designed for fighting groups, including grenades, timed explosives, and various objects Ye Yang did not recognize. Wang Feng gave them all to him, and Ye Yang placed everything into his storage space. This was the standard equipment issued to hunters on missions.
“How do you use this thing?”
Ye Yang picked up a strange little box and began pressing its buttons at random. He had never even seen anything like it.
A fist slammed into his head. A hand snatched the box away and hurled it into the distance.
Ye Yang had not even had time to react when a tremendous explosion erupted. At the edge of the training field, a mushroom cloud rose into the sky, and the entire wall was blown apart.

“The repair costs are coming out of your salary!” Wang Feng said coldly.
Ye Yang’s mouth hung open for a long while. When he finally came to his senses, he was overcome with gloom. He had not even received his first paycheck, and it was already being deducted.
What a miserable life.
“Wait, where’s the armor?”
As Ye Yang searched through the standard equipment, he discovered that there was no armor at all. He had always liked those ancient-style half-plate armors. After looking at them for long enough, they were actually rather cool.
“Interns aren’t allowed to wear armor,” Wang Feng said coldly. “If you want one, pass the trial first.”
Wang Feng was a man of swift and decisive action. Once everyone had arrived, he said nothing more and simply ordered the helicopter to prepare for takeoff.
“What? We’re taking off already? Isn’t a teacher coming with us?” Chen Yun asked in astonishment. It was her first real battle, after all, and she was still somewhat afraid.
Wang Feng shot her an annoyed glance without answering. With a whoosh, he leaped into the helicopter, leaving the other three no choice but to follow.
Sitting beside Wang Feng, Ye Yang was baffled. Was he going with them…?
No, wait!
Was this guy actually accompanying them on their mission?
Ye Yang was completely dumbfounded.
Sang Shi and Chen Yun realized it as well. Their faces lit up with excitement.
The Great Thunder King! Wang Feng, the Thunder Emperor!
He was actually accompanying them on their internship? Then this battle was utterly without suspense. Even if Wang Feng encountered several million zombies, he would not be intimidated in the slightest.
“Stop daydreaming.”
As if he had seen through their thoughts, Wang Feng said coldly, “I’m only supervising you. I absolutely will not intervene. Everything depends on you.”
“Uh…”
Everyone’s spirits sank. Ye Yang, however, gritted his teeth. If there was no danger, they could naturally rely on themselves. But if danger arose, would this man really refuse to save them?
Impossible.
“Ye Yang, take care of yourself! Come back alive!”
The helicopter had barely taken off when an extraordinarily shrill cry rose from the training field.
Ye Yang turned his head and saw Qi Fang.
How had that girl gotten there?
All right, what she had shouted was rather ominous, but Ye Yang was still happy. This eccentric girl actually knew how to worry about someone.
“Don’t you dare die! You still have to play games with me!”
Qi Fang screamed at the top of her lungs.
Inside the helicopter, Ye Yang felt like crying. Was the entire value of his life merely to play games with this girl?
“And remember, you’re my slave and bodyguard, my private property! Don’t let anyone else steal you away!”
Inside the helicopter, Ye Yang vomited three pints of blood and still could not stop. He had grown to hate Qi Fang with all his heart.
“You know that girl? Slave? Private property?”
Sang Shi’s mouth was wide enough to swallow two eggs.
With an expression of helpless misery, Ye Yang gave a long sigh and roughly explained how Qi Fang had rescued him from the laboratory. He also described how strange and eccentric the girl was.
The two of them burst into laughter, and even Wang Feng could not help smiling.
