Chapter 34: Internship Preparations
"You're so lucky! You actually get to hang out in a girls' class, and damn, you’re even staying in the girls' dormitory? You animal!" Sang Shi exclaimed in constant admiration as soon as he reached the third floor.
Ye Yang wiped the sweat from his brow, offering a perfunctory response. In truth, he found it quite embarrassing. A man living in the girls' dormitory—and at his age, he felt like an uncle, having no real interest in these young girls. Well, except for Chen Yun, of course.
Moreover, Ye Yang didn't actually spend much time with the girls. He left early and returned late, rarely crossing paths with anyone, and he never even went to class, as Wang Feng trained him personally.
"Hi, Ye Yang..." A girl greeted him from ahead. Ye Yang nodded with a hurried, forced smile, while inwardly feeling flustered—he didn't even know her name.
"So lucky..." Sang Shi, standing beside him, was dying of envy.
There weren't many people in the classroom. Aside from Chen Yun reading, only the twins were lounging at their desks, chatting. When they saw Ye Yang and Sang Shi enter, they greeted them with smiles. Sang Shi was naturally thrilled beyond words, but Ye Yang let out a sigh.
He noticed Chen Yun looking at him with an awkward expression. Was the girl still feeling depressed about what happened last time?
"About that, I asked Commander Wang yesterday regarding the internship, and he agreed. I wanted to ask what you think—are you still willing to do the internship with me?" Ye Yang asked, feeling a bit awkward.
"Internship? He agreed? You asked for me?" Chen Yun’s eyes widened, and she let out a shriek of excitement. She had thought it was a lost cause, especially since Ye Yang had practically fled the restaurant that day and hadn't sought her out for several days afterward. She never expected him to actually agree.
"Yeah, if you're willing, we can do the internship together. He’s coming with us too—this is Sang Shi, my friend," Ye Yang said sincerely.
"Nice to meet you, Sang Shi! Wow, an elite!" Chen Yun rubbed her hands together in excitement. She hadn't expected Ye Yang to agree, nor that their third companion would be an elite like Sang Shi.
"Ahem, just call me 'Little Rock,' don't call me 'Zombie.' And hello, beautiful, may I ask your name?" Sang Shi struck a polite pose. Ye Yang turned away and gave a dry chuckle; he had gone through that phase too, unable to resist winking at every pretty girl he saw.
There weren't many people at the Hunter Academy, and they saw each other often, but hunters were generally busy, and those in different classes rarely interacted. The two introduced themselves once more.
"Shall we find a place to chat? Maybe... discuss our combat coordination?" Sang Shi suggested. Ye Yang and Chen Yun nodded immediately, as none of them had participated in real combat yet.
"Let's go to my room, it's just behind the classroom," Chen Yun said with a smile. Sang Shi nodded instantly—a girl’s boudoir! He had never been in one before. Ye Yang agreed as well; his own room wasn't convenient since Qi Fang was still holed up there, and he couldn't get rid of her.
"By the way, about that day, I'm really sorry, I... I..." Chen Yun suddenly grabbed Ye Yang and whispered, her eyes reddening. She looked genuinely regretful.
"Oh... I've already forgotten about it. Never mind, it's nothing," Ye Yang said, waving it off dismissively. The girl immediately broke into a smile through her tears.
Forgotten? How could he possibly forget? Ye Yang wiped sweat from his brow in private. For the past few days, he hadn't been able to stop thinking about the way Chen Yun had tempted him, and just a moment ago, when he looked at her, he had almost shamelessly gotten aroused again.
Chen Yun’s room was lovely. Although the decor was simple, it radiated the girl's elegance. Sang Shi couldn't help but offer a few more compliments; the guy seemed particularly attentive when it came to girls.
Chen Yun served three glasses of juice and began to introduce herself. "I'm a sensory-type hunter, only LV2. My ability is freezing. It's... not very powerful, but I'm quite skilled with it. I can't be the main striker in team combat, but the freezing support should be very effective. I hope I can be of help to you both."
"Haha, LV2 is fine! I've got you covered, and freezing is a great ability," Sang Shi said, patting his chest. "By the way, I'm a strength-type—or more accurately, a charge-type. My ability is to store all my monster energy and release it in one massive burst. I can only do it once, but the power... heh, Ye Yang knows."
"In combat, I use gauntlets. Instructor Ling taught me some techniques. While not overwhelmingly strong, I can easily handle a predator in a one-on-one. Your freezing will be the perfect complement to my monster energy burst—the 'Magic Cannon.' You lock the enemy down, and I'll finish them!"
Sang Shi spoke with such excitement that it was clear he liked showing off his strength. Ye Yang didn't mind, though; after all, he really would be the main force in this fight.
"Uh..." Ye Yang scratched his head before speaking. He honestly didn't know how to describe his own strength; he wasn't even sure if he could be considered strong.
"As for me, I have no ability and my attributes aren't clear. I don't really know what to say. Boss Wang says my monster energy levels are high—I might reach LV2 or close to LV3 before the internship. As for my fighting style... I'm not sure. It's probably close-quarters, just using monster energy for attacks."
Ye Yang was sweating profusely as he spoke. He felt completely useless, and his explanation was incredibly vague. Currently, all he could do was coat his fists in monster energy and smash bricks for practice.
Sang Shi and Chen Yun didn't look down on him. Chen Yun wasn't particularly strong herself, and Sang Shi had absolute confidence in his own abilities. They asked a few more detailed questions about Ye Yang's fighting, leaving him sweating even more as he tried to answer.
"Hmm... coating your fists with monster energy to attack? That makes you the same type as Gao Ting, though your speed isn't quite up to hers. Let's call you a strength-type," Sang Shi said, stroking his chin. "That's actually pretty good!"
"Ah? Pretty good?" Ye Yang was bewildered. He couldn't see what was so good about himself.
"Think about it. I can use my gauntlets for close combat, coordinating attacks or defense with you, while Chen Yun uses freezing to control and support. If we run into a powerful predator, you step in and tank it, Chen Yun provides support, and I finish the fight with my Magic Cannon. Tsk, that's perfect!"
Sang Shi, who had extensive combat experience, quickly mapped out a rough battle plan, leaving Chen Yun looking excited.
Ye Yang nodded, thinking it over. It did sound solid. But could he really tank a monster as powerful as a predator? Last time, even a mutant had nearly ended his life.
"Since you coat your fists in energy, you can use it for both attack and defense. You'll understand once you try it," Sang Shi said with a grin. "By the way, what weapons are you two using? Let's see them."
As he spoke, he brought out his own gauntlet—a right-hand piece studded with solid mercury spikes, which was powerful in close combat and protected his hand when firing his 'Magic Cannon.'
Chen Yun’s weapon was a simple short blade, much like a kitchen knife, as her role was support and her weapon wasn't crucial.
"I... I don't have a weapon yet," Ye Yang said awkwardly. He had returned the weapon Lin Tian had given him, and Wang Feng had told him to pick a design to have one forged, but he hadn't decided on anything yet.
Sang Shi nodded. "Since you're close-quarters, I suggest you use gauntlets like me, or a single-handed greatsword like Instructor Ling's. A katana would work too, but don't go for anything too long or bulky, or it’ll interfere with your speed and our coordination."
"Can't it be long?" Ye Yang scratched his head. He had actually wanted a long spear. As he spoke, he grabbed a piece of paper and sketched out a traditional long spear.
"No way!" Sang Shi shook his head directly. "You're a beginner. If the weapon is too long, it'll be hard to channel your monster energy, and it'll ruin your speed. Wait until you're more experienced. Just start with a short blade—maybe a bit longer than Chen Yun's."
"Yeah, alright!" Ye Yang nodded. A short blade it is. He would forge a spear later; he really had a soft spot for them. Zhao Zilong, standing tall with his spear on TV, was his absolute idol.
Most hunters carried a mercury-based weapon and a modern one. Sang Shi had a submachine gun, so Ye Yang chose one as well. Chen Yun had originally used a pistol, but at Sang Shi's insistence, she switched to a rifle to make up for her lack of offensive power.
"Tsk tsk, with this setup, our team is practically perfect—two melee, one support, or one melee, one ranged, one support," Sang Shi said, rubbing his hands in excitement. Chen Yun and Ye Yang nodded vigorously, their confidence boosted significantly.
"By the way, who is the supervising instructor for the internship? Did you ask?" Sang Shi inquired.
"Ah? Do we have to have an instructor for the internship?" Ye Yang started sweating again. He really didn't know anything; Wang Feng hadn't mentioned it.
"Yeah, there's always an instructor, though they rarely intervene. It's meant to test our own capabilities. Don't worry about it—just hope it's not someone too incompetent," Sang Shi said nonchalantly.
Ye Yang and Chen Yun shared a bitter smile. This guy... he was a bit too arrogant, questioning an instructor's ability. What Ye Yang didn't know was that many instructors at the Hunter Academy weren't actually that strong; some were only LV2. They were mostly veterans with impeccable theoretical knowledge but little field experience, and in actual combat, they might not even be as capable as an elite student like Sang Shi.
After settling on the internship dates, the three went their separate ways. Ye Yang wandered off to find Wang Feng. He figured he’d have that traditional long spear made anyway—he could just use it later. He just hoped Wang Feng wouldn't be too stingy.
"A long spear? Not bad. Do you want any decorations? This weapon will be with you for a long time," Wang Feng said leisurely. He pulled out a large silver sword, intricately carved with various patterns and designs. It was truly beautiful.
"Patterns? How about a dragon?" Ye Yang rubbed his hands. As a descendant of the Yan and Huang, a dragon was the only choice.
"Up to you. Decide for yourself. You can name the weapon and have it engraved, or just put your own name on it," Wang Feng said, waving a hand lazily. He couldn't be bothered with the details and had his secretary take Ye Yang to get it sorted.
A vintage-style long spear, with a massive black dragon coiling around the shaft. As for the name—Dark Dragon Spear? Ye Yang excitedly told the secretary the details. Since his monster energy was currently black, the dark dragon design was perfect. Even if his energy changed color later, black was always a classic.
However, the spear was complicated to craft, especially the engraving. It likely wouldn't be ready before the internship, but Ye Yang wasn't in a hurry. He told the secretary to just let him know when it was done. For now, he went to the armory and picked out a compact, efficient katana to tide him over.
As for the submachine gun, Ye Yang picked one at random and gave it a test fire, then fled in embarrassment as the secretary giggled. His aim was truly terrible, but fortunately, hunters rarely relied on guns.
Everything was ready, and all that was left was the internship. Of course, in the remaining days, Ye Yang had to train even harder. Even without Wang Feng watching him, he never stopped his grueling physical conditioning.
Sang Shi’s battle plan was based on the premise that he would be near LV3. If he didn't reach that level, Ye Yang would be completely useless during the internship. Although Sang Shi had promised he could help Ye Yang pass the internship on his own, that... that would just be too embarrassing.
