In the faculty office, Ye Yang immediately spotted Lin Tian grinning maliciously and Wang Feng sitting there with his usual icy expression. He understood at once what was going on, and his teeth began grinding on their own.

There was no need to ask. Those two bastards had definitely cooked up trouble for him.

“Relax, it’s nothing,” Lin Tian said cheerfully, patting Ye Yang on the shoulder. Ye Yang ignored him completely, slumping down to one side and staring blankly into space.

There were seven or eight people in the office. Apart from those two, several others were dressed as teachers. Ye Yang recognized one of them: Ling Fengyan, who was frowning as he discussed something with Wang Feng.

Another was a fat old man, busily scribbling on a sheet of paper. When he saw Ye Yang enter, he immediately put down his pen, picked up a form, and said, “You’re here? Let’s begin calculating your classification.”

There were two kinds of classification. The first used instruments to assess the strength of one’s supernatural ability. The second combined all the test results to estimate one’s approximate combat ability. This was the comprehensive classification—in other words, one’s hunter rank.

“Tell me your test results,” the fat old man said.

Ye Yang curled his lip and looked straight at Wang Feng. More than half of his results were impossible to disclose, and he did not even know the rest himself. Wang Feng had never told him.

“Potential demon-power value: excellent!” Wang Feng answered directly.

The fat old man froze, then examined Ye Yang carefully from head to toe. “Excellent? Not bad, young man. I haven’t seen a newcomer with an excellent potential demon-power value in quite some time.”

“Heh heh.” Ye Yang unconsciously puffed out his chest, allowing himself a moment of smugness. Unfortunately, that feeling did not last long.

“No supernatural ability for now. His various attribute scores average between fifteen and twenty. As for actual combat... You’ve killed quite a few zombies, right? And fought mutants as well? Then write down ‘good,’ I suppose,” Wang Feng murmured.

“No supernatural ability? Attribute scores of fifteen to twenty? Are you kidding me?”

The fat old man nearly spat blood. Even Ye Yang felt embarrassed. He really was making a disgraceful showing.

Frowning, the fat old man looked between Ye Yang and Wang Feng before continuing, “If his potential demon-power value is excellent, he could technically be assigned an LV3 rank. But an LV3 hunter must possess at least an LV2 supernatural ability, and his highest attribute score must reach eighty-five. Even if his demon-power value is excellent, that only reflects his potential. It hasn’t been developed yet.”

“Even an LV1 hunter needs, at the very least, some fluctuation of supernatural power, and an attribute score of at least eighty, doesn’t he? With nothing but a good demon-power value, how am I supposed to calculate his classification? And he’s supposed to participate in field training? He can’t possibly meet the requirements for LV3! Without LV3, how can he take part in the training?”

The fat old man’s words forced Ye Yang’s head lower and lower until it was almost beneath the desk. It was not as if he had asked to be classified for field training. Those two idiots were the ones who had arranged it. Why was the old man questioning him?

“No one asked you to calculate anything. Just register his rank and put it on file,” Lin Tian said irritably.

“If I don’t calculate his classification, how am I supposed to register it?” The fat old man’s mind was nearly at the point of crashing.

“Honestly, you’re hopeless.”

Looking impatient, Lin Tian snatched the form from the old man, scribbled all over it at random, then wrote a huge “LV3” at the very top.

“Hmm... Don’t make it too frightening. LV3 is fine. As long as he can participate in the training.”

Ye Yang was completely dumbfounded. Even Ling Fengyan, sitting across from him, stared in disbelief. This was not merely cheating—they were simply making things up!

“You... You... How can you do this? He doesn’t have the ability at all! How can you just write down LV3 and force him into field training? People could die, you know?”

The fat old man was so furious that his beard stood on end.

“Why are you making such a fuss? Just fill it out. It’s nothing but a formality,” Wang Feng said impatiently, waving a hand.

The faculty office fell silent. No one knew what to say. After trembling for a long while, the fat old man finally sighed and cast Wang Feng a deeply aggrieved look, as though saying: You outrank me, so I’ll endure it.

Ye Yang was still utterly bewildered. He had no idea what was happening. Ling Fengyan, however, grabbed him and pulled him aside, whispering, “Did you... offend those two?”

“What? No, I don’t think so.”

Ye Yang was completely at a loss.

“You’re not LV3. You don’t even have a supernatural ability. You’re only a new student. If you go straight into combat training, it’ll be extremely dangerous.” Ling Fengyan’s expression was strange. He glanced at Wang Feng and had essentially concluded that the man was using his authority to take personal revenge against Ye Yang.

“Dangerous?” Ye Yang was startled. He still had no idea what was going on.

“Yes, and not just a little.” Ling Fengyan gritted his teeth. “If you’re being forced into this, say so. I may not have as much authority as they do, but I still have considerable influence in the military. I can certainly help you lodge a complaint and fight for you.”

Looking at Ling Fengyan, Ye Yang felt a surge of gratitude. He did not know the whole story, but they had only known each other for a few days and met a handful of times. Yet Ling Fengyan was willing to stand up to Wang Feng on his behalf. Wang Feng was the head of the military, after all.

Still... Ye Yang did not want him to do that. In general, he trusted Lin Tian. That man would never harm him. If he wanted Ye Yang dead, he could simply have shot him outside the city. It would take only one bullet.

“Don’t worry. Uncle Lin guarantees that nothing will happen,” Lin Tian had said when they entered. Ye Yang believed him completely.

“It’s all right. I believe nothing will happen. Thank you, Teacher Ling,” Ye Yang said with utmost sincerity. Even though he refused the offer of help, he was grateful to Ling Fengyan from the bottom of his heart.

Ling Fengyan said nothing more. He merely sighed deeply, patted Ye Yang on the shoulder, and left. As he went, he fixed Wang Feng with a hard stare, as though issuing some kind of warning.

Wang Feng naturally paid no attention. Ye Yang, however, saw it all clearly and felt another wave of gratitude. This big man really was treating him well, despite the fact that they had met only by chance.

“Don’t worry. Nothing will happen. But I may not be there during your training. You’ll have to leave everything to the chief,” Lin Tian said. He had a mission and had to depart immediately.

“You have seven days. Do everything you can to learn all the practical knowledge necessary for combat. I’ve already had someone compile a set of materials and deliver them to your dormitory. If you don’t understand something, ask someone. Any teacher at the academy will do, and you can come directly to me as well.”

“During these seven days, you must do more than study. Most importantly, you need to find a way to unlock your potential demon power. Otherwise, you will definitely die during the training. I’ll find a way to help you with that. Come see me at five every morning. Do not be late.”

“There’s one more thing. Hunters rarely fight alone, so the training won’t be a solo operation either. The instructor has already been assigned. As for your companions, choose them yourself. You may select two, but they must be students of this academy. You absolutely cannot choose teachers. Whether you know them or not doesn’t matter. Just give me the names.”

“Any other questions? If not, go back.”

After saying all this, Wang Feng let out a long breath. It was the longest speech he had ever delivered; he had apparently exhausted an entire year’s supply of words.

“...”

Ye Yang stared wide-eyed for quite some time before finally reacting. He was still utterly confused. What did Wang Feng mean, telling him to go back? But Wang Feng had no intention of explaining anything further. He only told Ye Yang to come see him at five the following morning.

When Ye Yang stepped out of the faculty office, he had no idea what he was supposed to do. Wang Feng made him feel as though he had been shoved onto a stage before he was ready. He had thought that after entering the Hunter Academy, he would simply work hard and achieve something. He had never expected everything to begin so urgently.

He had only just arrived. He knew nothing and no one. And now he was immediately expected to begin practical combat training? He did not even know what he was supposed to do.

“Don’t worry. The chief will arrange everything,” Lin Tian said before trotting away. There was no need to ask—he had obviously taken leave to go home and keep his wife company.

“Fine... Do whatever you want. If you’re capable, just go ahead and kill me.”

Ye Yang threw his head back and let out a long sigh.

Several figures approached from the direction of the cafeteria. Only then did Ye Yang realize that it was already noon and time to eat. But just as he was about to leave, someone called out to him.

“Bodyguard Number One!”

“...”

Ye Yang rolled his eyes. What did this girl want now? Why had she come looking for him again?

When he turned around, he was stunned. Qi Fang had not come alone. She was accompanied by a large group of girls, and she was holding Gao Ting’s arm. How had those two ended up together?

“Tingting and I are good friends now,” Qi Fang explained with a cheerful laugh. “She helped me when we were in the village. And while you were in the hospital, she even took me to the dormitory to play. Wow, it’s even more comfortable than Uncle Lin’s place! You’re really lucky.”

“Oh... So that’s how it is.”

Ye Yang nodded, but he had no time to stand around chatting with these girls. He had only seven days. After brushing them off with a few perfunctory replies, he turned to leave.

“I have things to do. I need to prepare for practical combat training.”

“Prepare for training?”

Gao Ting cried out in surprise, and all the girls stared blankly at Ye Yang.

“Yeah, I don’t really understand it either. Uncle Lin and Wang Feng said that it starts in seven days. Damn, I have to study, get up early to train tomorrow, and choose teammates. What kind of mess is this?”

Ye Yang grumbled with a gloomy expression.

The girls had no intention of letting him go. They surrounded him, chattering and questioning him for a long while before gradually piecing together what had happened. Another round of astonished exclamations followed.

“By the way, can you join me for the training? And is Sang Shi busy? I don’t really know anyone yet, so I have no idea who would be a good choice.”

Ye Yang sounded awkward. He truly did not want to invite Gao Ting. Although she was powerful, she was far too cold toward him. But he had no other options, and he needed two companions.

“I’m sorry.”

Gao Ting shook her head immediately. After thinking for a moment, she added, “Sang Shi should be available. Teacher Ling and I are leaving tomorrow to carry out a mission. It’s a small assignment and should require no more than two people, so he’ll be free.”

“Oh...”

Ye Yang nodded. He could go ask Sang Shi, then. But he was still short one person. Looking at the flock of chattering sparrows around him, he could not even name a single one of them, much less tell what rank they were. Inviting someone so abruptly would be far too presumptuous.

“Training? I’ll go with you! I’m your master!”

Qi Fang immediately jumped up in excitement. She tilted her head, thought for a moment, and continued, “But you have to get me a rifle. I already gave mine to Uncle Zheng.”

“Don’t even think about it. Please, spare me. You aren’t a hunter.”

Ye Yang shook his head at once. Qi Fang ground her teeth angrily, but there was nothing she could do. She really was not a student of the Hunter Academy.

“Master? Slave? Bodyguard?”

One of the girls suddenly asked the question. Gossip was a woman’s natural instinct, especially when it involved such an entertaining story. Qi Fang was delighted to show off. She immediately joined the other girls in chattering away, recounting every embarrassing thing that had happened between her and Ye Yang from beginning to end.

Ye Yang could do nothing but grit his teeth and run. He pretended not to hear the waves of laughter behind him. He hated Qi Fang to death. That little girl would never stop until she had completely ruined his reputation.

What Ye Yang did not know was that, at the very moment he ran off, one figure quietly slipped away from the group of girls as well. Her small face was tightly furrowed as she gazed at his retreating back, deep in thought. After a long while, she finally could not resist and chased after him.
