Chapter Thirty-Seven: A Little Lesson for You!
"Fine, then I will give you one chance!"
Tang Rumeng watched her subordinate with high expectations, hoping he could win back some dignity for her, while not forgetting to cast a side-glance at Lin Tian.
"Hmph, don't you get cocky, kid!"
Lin Tian was in no rush to leave. Instead, he kept a deliberate distance, leaning against the wall, watching the two of them with an amused expression.
"Heh, if you two can actually find something good in there, I’ll eat the money I’ve earned today!"
The stall owner watched nervously as the middle-aged man focused intensely on selecting a stone. "Could this guy actually be a pro?"
Under the watchful eyes of several parties, the middle-aged man finally chose a rock, carried it to the instrument, and began to operate it with a practiced air. At first glance, he looked quite professional.
Seeing this, the corners of Tang Rumeng’s mouth curled into a smug smile. She sneered, "It doesn't look that hard after all. I thought it was something complicated." Her words were clearly aimed at Lin Tian.
A strange smile touched Lin Tian’s face. "Truly impressive. One move and ten thousand yuan goes down the drain."
Moments later, under his gaze, the middle-aged man chiseled the stone open, and his hands suddenly froze.
"How is it? Did you strike a blue-grade gem?" Tang Rumeng hurried forward, pushing the man aside to look at the instrument.
The result, however, left her deeply disappointed. The stone in the device yielded no jade; it was just an ordinary rock.
"Clap, clap, clap—"
Lin Tian clapped his hands a few times and praised, "Truly a case of 'if you don't act, you don't act, but when you do, you shock the world.' That was absolutely brilliant."
Seeing this, the stall owner couldn't help but sigh in relief. He walked over to Tang Rumeng with a fawning smile and complimented, "This young lady looks extraordinary, and your subordinate is quite capable, he is simply..."
Before he could finish, he was met with a solid slap across the face, sending him stumbling to the ground. He was stunned, and in his resentment, he muttered, "Why are you so rude? I was just trying to be polite, and you hit me instead."
"Shut up if you don't want to die!" Tang Rumeng glared at him fiercely. The stall owner, despite his age, was actually cowed by a teenage girl. He gulped and said nothing more.
Tang Rumeng then vented her anger on the middle-aged man, slapping him repeatedly while cursing, "You shameful piece of trash! What use are you alive? Why don't you just die!"
The middle-aged man kept his mouth shut, feeling aggrieved. He had carefully observed and analyzed Lin Tian’s every move and expression, feeling so certain of success that he had decided to go for it. Who could have imagined he would fail, and so thoroughly?
After a while, Tang Rumeng, exhausted from her outburst, finally stopped. The middle-aged man was left with a bruised face and welts on his back and shoulders. Even so, he had to bow and scrape to appease her, "Miss, you must be tired. Please, take a rest."
Tang Rumeng snorted, turned around, and headed toward her car. As she passed Lin Tian, she shot him a sharp look. "Kid, you’d better hope I never see you again."
"I couldn't wish for anything more," Lin Tian replied coolly.
Seeing his "don't-care-at-all" attitude, Tang Rumeng was furious but helpless, so she simply made a mental note to settle the score later.
"Oh, right..." Lin Tian suddenly called out.
Tang Rumeng turned back, feeling an inexplicable glimmer of expectation.
"Since you're leaving," Lin Tian asked, "can I have the remaining two chances?"
"You..." Tang Rumeng turned and stomped into the car in a rage. Just before driving off, she leaned out the window and shouted, "Take them!"
"Thank you," Lin Tian replied politely before walking toward the stall.
Seeing the boy approach, the stall owner’s heart sank with panic. He swallowed hard and asked, "Little brother, how about this... I’ll give you twenty thousand yuan, and you... you just walk away. Don't open any more stones."
A long line of black appeared on Lin Tian’s forehead. Is he really that afraid of me?
"Look, I don't need the money. How about I just open once, and count it as two?"
"This..." The stall owner hesitated.
"You've already taken the money. Isn't it a bit dishonest to not let me play?" Lin Tian’s tone turned impatient. If the man insisted on this attitude, he would have to use "reason" to persuade him.
Sure enough, the stall owner, seeing only a young man left, no longer felt threatened. He sneered, "Kid, you've opened five times and found good jade every time. As the saying goes, 'once or twice is fine, but not three times.' Isn't it you who is being dishonest?"
"Since you want to play dirty, I’m done reasoning with you." Lin Tian decided to cut to the chase. He checked for surveillance cameras nearby and then said, "I wonder, how much do you value your eyes?"
"Huh?" The stall owner was startled.
The next moment, he saw something shimmering in the boy's eyes, which quickly enveloped his own. Suddenly, his vision was obscured by something, turning completely dark.
"Ah—!" He screamed, clutching his eyes in agony. "What... what did you do to me!" he asked, his voice trembling.
Lin Tian said coldly, "I didn't do anything to you. There are surveillance cameras nearby that can see everything clearly. This is clearly a stunt you staged yourself, trying to extort money from me, isn't it?"
To be fair, he wasn't lying. He hadn't done anything to the stall owner; it was his 'Heavenly Eye'—just a small lesson. However, this exertion, on top of his previous fatigue, meant his Heavenly Eye would likely be dormant for a while.
Without lingering, Lin Tian turned and left. He had earned enough money in half a day, so he had plenty of time to go home and prepare for the Lantern Festival.
Back in his quiet home, Lin Tian felt a warmth in his heart. This was the first time he would spend the festival in his own little place, so he cherished it deeply and was very careful with the decorations. Time passed slowly...
